When History Meets Policy: One Teacher's Mission to Support Educators

The conversation reveals how Simmons rose from an interested elementary social studies teacher to becoming the president who oversaw Tennessee's hosting of the National Council for Social Studies conference in Nashville—what she calls "one of the highlights of my career." With her background in event planning, she successfully showcased Tennessee's rich historical landscape from Civil War to Civil Rights history to educators from across the nation.

Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:09.375 --> 00:00:11.207
I'm Devin Pintosa, your host.
00:00:11.207 --> 00:00:21.792
We are here in Gatlinburg, tennessee, at the Tennessee Council of Social Studies, and we are so excited to be here with Laura Simmons, the president of the Tennessee Council of Social Studies.
00:00:21.792 --> 00:00:22.373
Welcome, laura.
00:00:22.373 --> 00:00:24.518
Thank you so of the Tennessee Council of Social Studies.
00:00:24.518 --> 00:00:25.519
Welcome, laura.
00:00:25.800 --> 00:00:27.283
Thank you so much for having me.
00:00:27.524 --> 00:00:28.025
Thank you.
00:00:28.025 --> 00:00:31.193
So tell us a bit about your experience.
00:00:31.193 --> 00:00:32.241
You've been president.
00:00:32.241 --> 00:00:33.463
Now is it three years.
00:00:34.206 --> 00:00:35.668
Yes, that's correct.
00:00:35.668 --> 00:00:50.345
So, normally we run two-year terms and we were fortunate enough to host NCSS, our National Council's conference, last year in Nashville, so I ended up with an extended year.
00:00:50.927 --> 00:00:56.289
Wow, that's wonderful, and I understand you are also teaching simultaneously, right?
00:00:56.469 --> 00:00:57.171
Absolutely.
00:00:57.171 --> 00:00:59.366
I teach eighth grade early US history.
00:00:59.929 --> 00:01:02.927
Wow, and you're at a community middle school, is that right?
00:01:03.109 --> 00:01:05.709
Yes, I'm in Middle Tennessee, south of Nashville.
00:01:06.299 --> 00:01:07.001
Wonderful.
00:01:07.001 --> 00:01:09.891
And so how does that work?
00:01:09.891 --> 00:01:12.947
I would just like juggling.
00:01:12.947 --> 00:01:15.572
Okay, I am an eighth grade social studies teacher.
00:01:15.572 --> 00:01:17.667
I'm also running the TCSS.
00:01:17.667 --> 00:01:20.646
How does that happen?
00:01:22.441 --> 00:01:29.501
Well, I'm extremely fortunate to have a huge backing our other council members, our other board members.
00:01:29.501 --> 00:01:34.049
We have been a council for over 70 years.
00:01:34.450 --> 00:01:34.871
Oh, wow.
00:01:35.472 --> 00:01:40.703
And we have worked this into a well-oiled machine.
00:01:40.703 --> 00:02:15.733
So I have a lot of support and I was originally an elementary social studies teacher okay and so I did a couple of conferences, attended a couple of conferences myself and was interested in getting more involved with the board, and I approached the current president and asked how to get more involved and she invited me to a meeting and a few years later asked me if I was interested in serving in a position and asked me if I wanted to become our president-elect.
00:02:16.294 --> 00:02:16.574
Wow.
00:02:16.740 --> 00:02:22.073
Which put me in place to be the president when we hosted NCSS in Nashville last year.
00:02:22.659 --> 00:02:23.481
That's amazing.
00:02:23.481 --> 00:02:30.254
So I understand your career is extraordinary because it's usually a two-year term, correct?
00:02:32.007 --> 00:02:39.633
Yes, correct, we were trying to figure out how to navigate that without having our own state conference last year.
00:02:39.633 --> 00:02:46.736
So everybody thought this was kind of the easiest way to go was just to extend a year until we got here to.
00:02:46.776 --> 00:02:48.305
Gatlinburg there we go, that's right.
00:02:48.305 --> 00:02:54.073
Can you tell us a little bit about what that experience was like, hosting the NCSS last year?
00:02:54.860 --> 00:02:58.951
At American Book Company in Woodstock, georgia, we are committed to your students' success.

00:03:23.656 --> 00:03:25.401
Hope to hear from you soon.
00:03:25.401 --> 00:03:25.902
Bye-bye.
00:03:27.325 --> 00:03:32.657
That was one of the highlights, probably, of my career.
00:03:32.657 --> 00:04:02.460
I have a little bit of an event planning background anyway, so that kind of fell right in with what I'm used to doing social studies educators from all over the country to downtown Nashville to experience all of our history and what Nashville has to offer, from Civil War history to Civil Rights history.
00:04:02.460 --> 00:04:08.777
It was an incredible experience to have everybody here in our backyard.
00:04:09.384 --> 00:04:15.016
That is wonderful, and can you tell me a bit about what you see in the future for TCSS?
00:04:15.016 --> 00:04:20.632
What are some of the needs of the education community and how is TCSS going to help serve them?
00:04:22.665 --> 00:04:33.963
There is not an educator out there today that isn't feeling the pressure of what it's like to be in the classroom, the pressure of what it's like to be in the classroom.
00:04:33.963 --> 00:04:49.437
And we, especially here in Tennessee, are dealing with all kinds of issues with what we know we are allowed to teach and maybe what we aren't sure whether or not we are allowed to teach.
00:04:49.437 --> 00:04:57.687
Sure, whether or not we are allowed to teach.
00:04:57.726 --> 00:05:29.851
We have our divisive concepts prohibited topics that the legislators have decided that we don't need to teach, and so helping educators navigate those waters and having resources available, working with the National Council and seeing what other states are doing to support their educators and relaying that information back to our teachers and being here helping them try to get reliable resources and things they can use in the classroom with their kids.
00:05:30.745 --> 00:05:43.711
Yes, I can understand that can create some new challenges in the classroom Absolutely, but it's wonderful that TCSS is there to step in and that you've been able to help with that process, including whatever the needs are.
00:05:43.711 --> 00:05:44.810
I know there's a lot of things.
00:05:44.810 --> 00:05:51.237
Our last guest spoke about AI coming in the classroom and that's created a new wave of things as well.
00:05:51.805 --> 00:05:52.870
Always new challenges.
00:05:53.050 --> 00:05:56.663
Yes, there's so much going on Alright, great.
00:05:56.663 --> 00:06:00.771
Is there anything you'd like to share with the TCSS community today?
00:06:03.637 --> 00:06:05.266
We are all in the same boat.
00:06:05.266 --> 00:06:31.091
So if we can ever do anything as a council, as board, to support you in the classroom, please reach out to us and let us know and we are always welcoming educators to get more involved with our group and we want to hear from you.
00:06:31.091 --> 00:06:36.173
So please let us know what we can do to support you better that's wonderful, uh.
00:06:36.213 --> 00:06:38.218
Thank you so much, laura simmons.
00:06:38.218 --> 00:06:38.800
Tennessee.
00:06:38.800 --> 00:06:43.728
Council of social studies president, thank you so much for coming on board with us today thank you so much for having me.
00:00:06.610 --> 00:00:09.375
00:00:09.375 --> 00:00:11.207
00:00:11.207 --> 00:00:21.792
00:00:21.792 --> 00:00:22.373
00:00:22.373 --> 00:00:24.518
00:00:24.518 --> 00:00:25.519
00:00:25.800 --> 00:00:27.283
00:00:27.524 --> 00:00:28.025
00:00:28.025 --> 00:00:31.193
00:00:31.193 --> 00:00:32.241
00:00:32.241 --> 00:00:33.463
00:00:34.206 --> 00:00:35.668
00:00:35.668 --> 00:00:50.345
00:00:50.927 --> 00:00:56.289
00:00:56.469 --> 00:00:57.171
00:00:57.171 --> 00:00:59.366
00:00:59.929 --> 00:01:02.927

00:01:06.299 --> 00:01:07.001
00:01:07.001 --> 00:01:09.891
00:01:09.891 --> 00:01:12.947
00:01:12.947 --> 00:01:15.572
00:01:15.572 --> 00:01:17.667
00:01:17.667 --> 00:01:20.646
00:01:22.441 --> 00:01:29.501
00:01:29.501 --> 00:01:34.049
00:01:34.450 --> 00:01:34.871

00:01:40.703 --> 00:02:15.733
