Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:04.312 --> 00:00:06.889
I am Devin Pintosi, your host.

00:00:06.889 --> 00:00:11.570
I am here with Julie Cobb, Director of Professional Services with Nearpod.

00:00:11.570 --> 00:00:13.153
Hello, Julie, Good morning.

00:00:13.153 --> 00:00:17.230
So tell us a little bit about what brings you to LACU.

00:00:18.580 --> 00:00:23.573
I am here with Nearpod and Vocabulary and we are doing several sessions.

00:00:23.573 --> 00:00:35.308
We've got a booth but we have a vocabulary session today on how you can use it to support science of reading and we have a session tomorrow on how it can support differentiation through choice sports.

00:00:36.371 --> 00:00:37.454
Wow, that is great.

00:00:37.454 --> 00:00:38.603
So you're doing two sessions.

00:00:38.683 --> 00:00:39.648
Yes, two sessions.

00:00:39.929 --> 00:00:40.832
Oh, that's wonderful.

00:00:40.832 --> 00:00:45.970
Can you tell us a bit about your career or what brought you into the education space initially?

00:00:46.761 --> 00:00:48.764
So I came into the education space.

00:00:48.764 --> 00:00:51.951
26 years no, 30 years ago.

00:00:51.951 --> 00:00:53.893
I spent 26 years in public education.

00:00:53.893 --> 00:01:04.031
I started out as a deaf education teacher and a special ed teacher, and I finished the last five years of my education space career as an instructional coach.

00:01:04.962 --> 00:01:05.343
Oh wow.

00:01:05.343 --> 00:01:07.088
What school systems did you work with?

00:01:07.582 --> 00:01:14.271
I worked in Lubbock Independent School District in Texas and in Fort Smith Independent School District in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

00:01:14.920 --> 00:01:15.340
Wow.

00:01:15.340 --> 00:01:21.034
Can you share with us maybe an aha moment you've had associated with education?

00:01:22.240 --> 00:01:24.870
My aha moment came really quite early.

00:01:24.870 --> 00:01:45.656
I worked with deaf students my first class was kindergartners and when a student was able to initiate a conversation or initiate a question with their language, I knew that we were building that language, and that was just so exciting for me, and so I had to keep doing it.

00:01:46.381 --> 00:01:47.346
That is wonderful.

00:01:47.346 --> 00:01:52.412
And so you moved from education into technology.

00:01:52.412 --> 00:01:53.846
What was that process like?

00:01:57.266 --> 00:02:08.448
So when I was in Fort Smith, we were a one-to-one school district, so we had just purchased computers for every student, and so Nearpod was one of the first tools that we used.

00:02:08.448 --> 00:02:10.171
It was one of the first tools that we purchased.

00:02:10.171 --> 00:02:34.114
During that time, I really got to know the people at the company and I got to know the product and just loved the product, and an opportunity came up in 2019 for a job where I got to continue to teach teachers how to use technology appropriately with their students with an amazing tool, and I applied and five years later, I'm still here.

00:02:34.760 --> 00:02:35.943
That is awesome, julie.

00:02:35.943 --> 00:02:37.710
You know my own children.

00:02:37.710 --> 00:02:42.163
They used Nearpod in their school experience, especially during COVID.

00:02:42.163 --> 00:02:43.770
And it was an amazing tool for them.

00:02:44.060 --> 00:02:47.110
Yes, yes, we were not really designed for distance learning.

00:02:47.110 --> 00:02:54.054
We were designed for in the classroom, but during COVID we found out that it worked really well for distance learning as well.

00:02:54.054 --> 00:02:57.945
Yeah, that is wonderful we were glad to provide that for teachers.

00:02:58.448 --> 00:02:59.069
That's great.

00:02:59.069 --> 00:03:05.193
Can you share with us some things you're hoping to get out of this conference that you'll be bringing to other places?

00:03:06.461 --> 00:03:12.193
I really enjoy coming to conferences because I continue to learn from educators that are still in the classroom.

00:03:12.193 --> 00:03:14.609
I continue to learn from other presenters.

00:03:14.609 --> 00:03:25.187
I'm always looking for new ways and new ideas, and education changes every day, and so I try and learn from every conversation.

00:03:25.709 --> 00:03:26.550
Oh, that's wonderful.

00:03:26.550 --> 00:03:35.584
Is there anything you'd like to share with the LACU community about things that you are doing or things that you want them to know about?

00:03:35.584 --> 00:03:37.587
Nearpod Sure sure.

00:03:37.668 --> 00:03:43.884
So, nearpod, if you've used it in the past, it has changed quite a bit over the last couple of years.

00:03:43.884 --> 00:04:05.389
One of our newest things that I'm excited to share with people and that I think teachers are going to be excited about, is our use of AI, and so we came to the AI game a little later than everybody else, because we were very deliberate about what we wanted it to do, and so what we've done is we've built into the program where it can help you develop multiple choice questions.

00:04:05.389 --> 00:04:19.432
We all know that multiple choice questions the hardest part is the three wrong answers, and so this can help you develop those and it really saves some time, and then it automatically goes right into the program as multiple choice questions or as a gamified quiz.

00:04:19.432 --> 00:04:22.446
So I am so excited to get to share that with everybody.

00:04:22.867 --> 00:04:23.949
Oh, that's wonderful, Julie.

00:04:23.949 --> 00:04:25.913
Well, thank you so much, julie.

00:04:25.913 --> 00:04:30.064
Julie Cobb with Nearpod, thank you so much for being on Spotlight for Success.

00:04:30.163 --> 00:04:30.846
Thank you very much.
