Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:09.335 --> 00:00:11.460
I am Devin Pintosi, your host.
00:00:11.460 --> 00:00:18.748
We are here at the Tennessee Council of Social Studies in Gatlinburg, tennessee, really having a good time here at the conference.
00:00:18.748 --> 00:00:22.629
I am here with Nancy Brennan-Strange.
00:00:22.629 --> 00:00:25.004
Welcome, nancy, thank you.
00:00:25.044 --> 00:00:25.867
I'm happy to be here.
00:00:26.451 --> 00:00:35.579
Yes, nancy is a singer and balladist that is here at TCSS and she did some performances, I believe, last night.
00:00:35.579 --> 00:00:37.883
Is that right, right, that's wonderful.
00:00:37.883 --> 00:00:45.734
So, nancy, tell us a bit about how that went last night and your experience working with music.
00:00:46.095 --> 00:00:54.740
Okay, well, I come from Knoxville and I have a strong interest in Appalachian music, even though I sing jazz too sometimes.
00:00:54.740 --> 00:01:04.668
But the performance I did last night was a lot of Appalachian ballads and some original songs I've written, and some are kind of silly.
00:01:04.668 --> 00:01:12.051
And I came here because I used to play at Mark Fincham's school when he was at White Pine oh, okay, junior high school.
00:01:12.051 --> 00:01:14.266
So that's how I ended up here.
00:01:15.081 --> 00:01:16.025
Oh, that's wonderful.
00:01:16.025 --> 00:01:21.171
And so tell me a bit about what drew you to the kind of music you do.
00:01:22.460 --> 00:01:27.504
Well, when I started singing it was a while back and I was kind of a.
00:01:27.504 --> 00:01:37.328
I started as a folk singer and then I met a lot of people that worked at a place called Apple Shop up in Wattsburg, kentucky and they had a recording studio, june Apple Records.
00:01:37.328 --> 00:01:50.171
And so I ended up getting obsessed with Appalachian music and I went and worked at June Apple for a year in the recording studio with Appalachian music and I went and worked at June Apple for a year in the recording studio and just I love that music.
00:01:50.171 --> 00:01:56.230
I've moved on to do other stuff too, but I think Appalachian music's like Resonates.
00:01:56.269 --> 00:01:56.510
Yeah.
00:01:57.581 --> 00:02:04.965
Nancy, tell us a bit about how your story with your family is kind of intertwined with the music you sing.
00:02:05.742 --> 00:02:09.852

Hope to hear from you soon.
00:02:36.301 --> 00:02:36.802
Bye-bye.
00:02:38.126 --> 00:03:04.420
Well, I was working at a school this is like 30 years ago and my cousin told me a whole story about how my grandmother had come over from Ireland and what I was doing at the school was getting kids to interview older relatives or neighbors or something and ask them about growing up.
00:03:04.420 --> 00:03:15.473
And so when my cousin told me this story about my great-grandmother, I came home literally and just wrote this whole song called Kate Sullivan after my great-grandmother, that's wonderful.
00:03:15.593 --> 00:03:16.736
Yeah, that's great.
00:03:16.736 --> 00:03:19.532
Well, we would love to hear one of your songs.
00:03:19.532 --> 00:03:27.855
If you can sing that, that would be fantastic if that's good with you, alright.
00:03:27.915 --> 00:03:28.758
Okay, alright.
00:03:28.758 --> 00:03:44.320
My name is Kate Sullivan and I came from Ireland over to America in 1859.
00:03:44.320 --> 00:03:46.770
And I was only eight years old.
00:03:46.770 --> 00:03:59.655
We sailed on a great big ship Across the Atlantic Ocean and when the storms blew across the sea, we tied ourselves on board.
00:03:59.655 --> 00:04:02.349
We were bound for America, land of opportunity.
00:04:02.349 --> 00:04:12.310
Ourselves on board, we were bound for America, land of opportunity, leaving our homeland behind us Because of the.
00:04:12.310 --> 00:04:13.173
That's all right, okay.
00:04:14.167 --> 00:04:14.729
Is that enough?
00:04:14.729 --> 00:04:16.033
That's wonderful.
00:04:16.033 --> 00:04:17.559
Yes, anything you want to say.
00:04:17.559 --> 00:04:19.024
Thank you so much, that was great.
00:04:19.024 --> 00:04:26.608
Thank you, because you know, love hearing that music that resonates, you know, with someone's spirit, and then you're able to sing.
00:04:26.608 --> 00:04:27.891
That that's fantastic.
00:04:27.891 --> 00:04:29.357
Yeah, that's great.
00:04:29.357 --> 00:04:34.137
Well, do you have anything else you'd like to share with the TCSS community?
00:04:37.425 --> 00:04:38.670
This is a great conference.
00:04:38.812 --> 00:04:40.531
Yes, I feel a lot of energy here.
00:04:42.204 --> 00:04:42.528
That's great.
00:04:42.452 --> 00:04:43.454
I think you guys are going to have a great conference here, feel a lot of energy here.
00:04:43.377 --> 00:04:43.843

Nancy.
00:04:47.165 --> 00:04:51.935
Once again, this is Nancy Brennan-Strange, a singer and balladist here at the TCSS.
00:04:51.935 --> 00:04:54.569
Thank you so much for participating with us today.
00:04:54.730 --> 00:04:55.793
Sure thank you for having me.
00:04:55.793 --> 00:04:57.076
Thank you, it's nice to meet you.
00:04:57.076 --> 00:04:57.778
Yeah, you're welcome.
00:00:06.591 --> 00:00:09.335
00:00:09.335 --> 00:00:11.460
00:00:11.460 --> 00:00:18.748
00:00:18.748 --> 00:00:22.629
00:00:22.629 --> 00:00:25.004
00:00:25.044 --> 00:00:25.867
00:00:26.451 --> 00:00:35.579
00:00:35.579 --> 00:00:37.883
00:00:37.883 --> 00:00:45.734
00:00:46.095 --> 00:00:54.740
00:00:54.740 --> 00:01:04.668
00:01:04.668 --> 00:01:12.051
00:01:12.051 --> 00:01:14.266
00:01:15.081 --> 00:01:16.025
00:01:16.025 --> 00:01:21.171
00:01:22.460 --> 00:01:27.504
00:01:27.504 --> 00:01:37.328
00:01:37.328 --> 00:01:50.171
00:01:50.171 --> 00:01:56.230
00:01:56.269 --> 00:01:56.510
00:01:57.581 --> 00:02:04.965
