00:00:06.490 --> 00:00:09.554
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.554 --> 00:00:11.567
I am Devin Pintosi, your host.

00:00:11.567 --> 00:00:17.092
We are here at the Tennessee Council of Social Studies in Gatlinburg, tennessee.

00:00:17.092 --> 00:00:27.814
We are here with our special guest, rosa Hentz, who is the 9-12, no 6 through 8 coordinator, the middle school coordinator in Hamilton County.

00:00:27.814 --> 00:00:29.495
Welcome, rosa, thank you.

00:00:29.495 --> 00:00:32.268
So it's so great that you're here with us today.

00:00:32.268 --> 00:00:41.414
What kind of things are you doing here with the 6 through 8 side of the house in social studies here at TCSS?

00:00:41.820 --> 00:00:43.747
Okay, well, we're really excited to be here.

00:00:43.747 --> 00:00:53.466
We actually brought with us five teachers from Hamilton County Schools as presenters, so I think earlier they might have said they were bullied into presenting, but they weren't.

00:00:53.466 --> 00:00:57.908
We actually challenged our teacher leaders in our Social Studies Leadership Council.

00:00:57.908 --> 00:00:59.720
We said you guys are doing such great things.

00:00:59.720 --> 00:01:03.750
We want to get the word out about what's happening great in Hamilton County Schools.

00:01:03.750 --> 00:01:14.004
And so we challenged them and they rose to the occasion and every single one of them have had outstanding presentations where people have stayed behind to ask questions and they are fired up.

00:01:14.004 --> 00:01:21.753
They're talking about coming back next year and they're excited to go back to their schools and talk about all the energy around quality social studies instruction.

00:01:22.120 --> 00:01:23.406
Oh, that is so wonderful.

00:01:23.406 --> 00:01:28.272
And what kinds of things are you seeing in terms of the trends out there in middle school social studies?

00:01:28.614 --> 00:01:46.713
The trends are all around inquiry, so it's all about asking one really strong, compelling question and then putting good quality resources in front of students primary and secondary documents that provide multiple perspectives about things that have taken place in history, and so that allows students to be the thinkers.

00:01:46.713 --> 00:01:53.947
They're doing the reading, they're doing the writing and they're discussing really deep concepts in history, and they're capable of doing it.

00:01:53.947 --> 00:01:58.052
How do we help them and support students in how we plan for instruction?

00:01:58.052 --> 00:01:59.444
So that's the big trend.

00:01:59.444 --> 00:02:02.730
So inquiry is where it's at in social studies right now.

00:02:03.161 --> 00:02:04.225
Okay, that's wonderful.

00:02:04.225 --> 00:02:09.293
That's good to know that that's where things are going, so we can all align our curriculums accordingly.

00:02:09.293 --> 00:02:11.022
So I understand.

00:02:11.022 --> 00:02:13.210
You've seen our ABC books before.

00:02:13.210 --> 00:02:13.811
I have.

00:02:14.240 --> 00:02:14.600
Actually.

00:02:14.600 --> 00:02:21.394
So this is my 24th year in education and I have used the ABC books and they have come a long way over the years.

00:02:21.394 --> 00:02:45.491
So when I started, they were black and white and I love to see they're in color now, and I see an emphasis on using primary and secondary sources, so there are direct quotes from important people in history, there's full color pictures, paintings, cave drawings whatever is connected to the content and then the fact that you have online materials available to teachers is really great too.

00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:51.390
Oh, that's wonderful, Rosa, and so tell us a little bit about your journey, your educational journey.

00:02:51.390 --> 00:03:01.967
I understand you're currently in the role of the middle school lead Content lead, yes, content lead for social studies, and before that, previously, you were in the classroom.

00:03:02.268 --> 00:03:05.209
I was, so I'm again 24th year in education.

00:03:05.209 --> 00:03:06.804
I've taught every subject.

00:03:07.126 --> 00:03:07.546
Thank you.

00:03:07.546 --> 00:03:10.269
I've taught every subject, k through 11.

00:03:10.269 --> 00:03:20.926
But the majority of my career has been in social studies and no matter where I go or where I've taught, I always come back to the realm of social studies and I always come back to middle school.

00:03:20.926 --> 00:03:27.165
So I always tell people that, like, middle school is my passion and social studies is my jam.

00:03:27.165 --> 00:03:34.264
So I'm in the absolute best job that I could be in to be able to support quality history education and work with such great teachers.

00:03:34.665 --> 00:03:38.765
That is wonderful, rosa, and what made you choose teaching as your vocation?

00:03:39.568 --> 00:03:43.663
At American Book Company in Woodstock, georgia, we are committed to your students' success.

00:03:43.663 --> 00:03:51.263
As you can see behind me, we have our workbooks and we have online testing and e-books that go on fancy iPads over here, for instance.

00:03:51.263 --> 00:03:57.264
They're all designed to help your students succeed and have higher test scores on their high-stakes assessments.

00:03:57.264 --> 00:04:08.353
Give us a call 888-264-5877, or find us on the web, abck12.com and you can receive a free trial or a free preview book of your choice.

00:04:08.353 --> 00:04:10.102
Hope to hear from you soon.

00:04:10.102 --> 00:04:10.603
Bye-bye.

00:04:12.668 --> 00:04:15.895
So the truth about this is I just wanted to be a regular person.

00:04:15.895 --> 00:04:18.951
When I was in high school, my parents were like, what does that mean?

00:04:18.951 --> 00:04:20.449
And I was like you know, get up, go to work.

00:04:20.449 --> 00:04:21.713
You know, have a job.

00:04:21.713 --> 00:04:24.494
And in my senior year I did the math.

00:04:24.494 --> 00:04:34.226
I worked a part-time job and I thought, hmm, regular people make minimum wage, at least in the town that I lived in, and I wanted to live on my own and I thought I better go to college.

00:04:34.226 --> 00:04:36.269
I wanted to live on my own and I thought I better go to college.

00:04:36.269 --> 00:04:37.488
So what would I be good at?

00:04:37.509 --> 00:04:39.690
And I had a teacher in my senior year.

00:04:39.690 --> 00:04:43.372
She said I'm old, I'm tired, I've been teaching for 36 years.

00:04:43.372 --> 00:04:44.653
We need new blood.

00:04:44.653 --> 00:04:52.660
And so literally one conversation made me decide to apply to go to college in January of my senior year.

00:04:52.660 --> 00:04:54.920
As a student, I was a good student.

00:04:54.920 --> 00:04:56.942
I just didn't have a plan for the future.

00:04:56.942 --> 00:05:03.490
So it was important that teachers talk about the profession.

00:05:03.490 --> 00:05:05.802
And she loved the profession, but she just knew, like I can't leave until there's somebody that can replace me.

00:05:05.802 --> 00:05:06.225
That's quality.

00:05:06.225 --> 00:05:07.749
So wonderful.

00:05:07.788 --> 00:05:20.108
Yeah, so I went to school to be an educator, so my degree is in history, but I of course, did the coursework to be a school teacher and have just continued to grow from there.

00:05:20.447 --> 00:05:23.014
Oh yeah, now here you are, mentoring the mentors.

00:05:23.274 --> 00:05:24.478
Right, that's amazing.

00:05:25.345 --> 00:05:27.430
And so tell us a little bit.

00:05:27.430 --> 00:05:33.709
You know you've seen a lot of changes in social studies over the years, and so do you have anything?

00:05:33.709 --> 00:05:37.317
Before we do that, tell us a little bit about your studies.

00:05:37.317 --> 00:05:38.630
You've been doing some new studies.

00:05:38.630 --> 00:05:40.370
You did graduate studies.

00:05:40.812 --> 00:05:51.545
Yes, so my graduate studies are in instructional leadership and it is about how can we help to work with our teachers that are in the classroom so there are more teachers than there are administrators.

00:05:51.545 --> 00:05:54.064
Who is the closest to the students?

00:05:54.064 --> 00:06:09.060
It's the teachers, and so how can we use quality leadership strategies to get our teachers and to bring out the best in their practice so that students are getting the depth of knowledge that they need?

00:06:09.281 --> 00:06:13.692
in social studies, just like your teachers were doing here at this conference.

00:06:13.733 --> 00:06:14.535
Right absolutely.

00:06:14.574 --> 00:06:15.476
That's so awesome.

00:06:15.476 --> 00:06:19.035
Do you have anything else you'd like to share with the TCSS community?

00:06:19.637 --> 00:06:32.052
So I would say, if you are not already a member of TCSS, you definitely want to join, because it's a great opportunity to be part of a state content-based professional organization.

00:06:32.052 --> 00:06:36.271
We want to be treated as professionals and so we have to stay on top of our game.

00:06:36.271 --> 00:06:45.709
So where's the place to come to get the best, most innovative strategies and the newest information in social studies and different perspectives?

00:06:45.709 --> 00:06:48.697
It's to come to your state association conference.

00:06:48.697 --> 00:06:55.629
So I would say, if you are already a member, think about how you can elevate the work that you're doing and the work of TCSS.

00:06:55.629 --> 00:06:59.139
We'd love to have you all come out and present.

00:06:59.139 --> 00:07:09.673
So think about what's great in your practice, whether it's a strategy or a task that you put in front of your students, and we'd love for you to apply to present at TCSS next year.

00:07:09.673 --> 00:07:10.574
I plan to see you.

00:07:11.295 --> 00:07:12.278
Wonderful, rosa.

00:07:12.278 --> 00:07:14.172
Well, thank you so much.

00:07:14.172 --> 00:07:22.716
It was great seeing you here today, nice to be here, and I wish you all the best on the next year in terms of everything that you're learning and applying there.

00:07:22.716 --> 00:07:31.334
Once again, rosa Hentz, with Hamilton County Schools, thank you so much, thank you.
