00:00:01.624 --> 00:00:04.911
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:04.911 --> 00:00:14.830
We are here at the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics with the president of SCCTM, Dr Eugene Bellamy Jr.

00:00:14.830 --> 00:00:15.631
Welcome.

00:00:16.053 --> 00:00:16.934
Thank you for having me.

00:00:17.780 --> 00:00:20.429
Eugene, it's such a pleasure to have you here with us.

00:00:20.429 --> 00:00:26.092
Can you tell us about the things that are going on at SCCTM here this conference?

00:00:26.739 --> 00:00:31.332
Yes, so this is our annual conference, our 48th annual conference, and we're excited.

00:00:31.332 --> 00:00:49.332
Some key things that I would like to highlight is for the Columbia area we've made a record in terms of the number of attendees we have over 850 attendees and also for the number of vendors we have 67 exhibition booths with 49 companies.

00:00:49.332 --> 00:00:50.334
So that's exciting.

00:00:50.334 --> 00:00:57.433
We've also added a couple of new elements with the new name badges and the ribbons that they can place on their name badges.

00:00:57.433 --> 00:01:04.834
So we're trying to up the ante with our conference so that it can resemble our national affiliate, the NCTM conference.

00:01:04.834 --> 00:01:06.885
So we're excited about all of those things.

00:01:07.224 --> 00:01:08.227
That is wonderful.

00:01:08.227 --> 00:01:14.381
I know there's got to be so much swirling around and there has been this whole conference dealing with the changes in the standards.

00:01:14.381 --> 00:01:16.626
Would you like to speak to any of that?

00:01:16.646 --> 00:01:19.111
It's just a work in progress.

00:01:19.111 --> 00:01:21.483
You know it comes with the territory.

00:01:21.483 --> 00:01:31.319
We know that this is coming about roughly every five years, and so you just got to kind of wrap your heads around it to make sure that you are looking at resources and tools.

00:01:31.319 --> 00:01:36.527
That's going to best position your teachers to teach well, as well as your students for success.

00:01:36.527 --> 00:01:43.870
So I think, as long as there's a collaborative effort with all voices being heard, we'll get through this rough patch.

00:01:44.721 --> 00:01:45.864
Yes, absolutely Well.

00:01:45.864 --> 00:01:50.983
It's wonderful Every time you know there's a progression, there's an improvement in mathematics, and that improved success.

00:01:50.983 --> 00:01:51.844
That's the goal.

00:01:51.844 --> 00:01:53.911
So that is so wonderful what you're doing there.

00:01:53.911 --> 00:01:57.106
Eugene, can you share with us a little bit about your other roles?

00:01:57.106 --> 00:02:01.045
I understand you're not only the president of SCCTM, but there are some other roles you have.

00:02:01.566 --> 00:02:34.393
So, yes, in the past I have been the vice president of middle schools, I've been the nominations chair and the president elect, so now I'm serving as president, but I also serve as president of the South Carolina Leaders of Math Education for our state as well, and so working so that these two organizations can function more like our affiliates that complement each other, and so that's been one of my big pushes as president of both organizations bringing the leaders of math and the teachers of math together, because we all have the same purpose and that is inspiring math in every child in the state.

00:02:34.919 --> 00:02:36.484
That is wonderful.

00:02:36.484 --> 00:02:42.906
Is there anything new in terms of a strand, maybe for next year, you'd like to share?

00:02:43.227 --> 00:02:45.211
I'm not sure if there's anything new.

00:02:45.211 --> 00:03:09.372
I know that we're going to make a more concerted effort to make sure the conference is balanced so that we have roughly the same amount of primary sessions as we do for elementary, middle and secondary, and even envisioning bringing in some collegiate-level courses for our pre-service teachers to kind of get their heads wrapped around what education is becoming in the state of South Carolina and preparing them for that shift.

00:03:09.372 --> 00:03:18.086
So I think we're always seeking to provide more balance so that those who attend both days feel like they actually have sessions to attend both days that relate to them.

00:03:18.748 --> 00:03:23.346
Wonderful balance that's so important, such a great thing to have for next year as well.

00:03:23.346 --> 00:03:27.313
Can you tell us anything else you'd like to share with the SCCTM community?

00:03:28.341 --> 00:03:29.021
Just excited.

00:03:29.021 --> 00:03:34.707
We invite you to our 49th conference in Greenville, south Carolina, where the theme is Making Math Matter.

00:03:34.707 --> 00:03:46.723
It's a way of life with infinite possibilities and if there's anything you need from us as the board of SCCTM, anything that you would like to see throughout the year outside of the conference, please contact us and let us know.

00:03:46.723 --> 00:03:48.146
You can reach us at scctm.

00:03:48.146 --> 00:03:51.503
org and all of our conference.

00:03:51.503 --> 00:03:55.157
Sorry, all of our email information is there for you to reach out to us.

00:03:55.157 --> 00:03:56.260
We are here to serve you.

00:03:57.043 --> 00:04:00.992
Well, Dr Eugene Bellamy Jr, thank you so much for participating with us today.

00:04:01.240 --> 00:04:02.384
Thank you so much for having me.

00:04:02.425 --> 00:04:03.509
All right, have a great day

00:04:03.569 --> 00:04:03.951
You too.

00:04:04.051 --> 00:04:04.334
Bye-bye.
