This podcast Spotlight for Success is our way of highlighting the incredible success stories happening in education right here in our home state of Georgia.
00:00:11.210 --> 00:00:14.555
Today, we're thrilled to be joined by Dr.
00:00:14.555 --> 00:00:21.969
Chris Cannon, with the Georgia Council for Economics Education, who has made a significant impact in the field of social studies and economics.
00:00:21.969 --> 00:00:28.687
We'll explore his journey, insights and the positive changes he's creating for students and teachers So let's get started.
00:00:28.687 --> 00:00:30.510
D r.
00:00:30.510 --> 00:00:32.484
Cannon, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
00:00:32.764 --> 00:00:33.185
Absolutely.
00:00:33.185 --> 00:00:34.387
Chris Cannon.
00:00:34.387 --> 00:00:38.546
Been teaching high school pretty much since 2002.
00:00:38.546 --> 00:00:46.865
Started at Morrow High School in Clayton County, georgia, then spent a couple of years at the Department of Education when we were changing curriculum and that was very eye-opening.
00:00:46.865 --> 00:00:47.868
It was a great experience.
00:00:47.868 --> 00:01:02.945
I got a lot of practice doing workshops and presenting to teachers and I saw kind of the impact you can have sort of statewide Went back to teaching for a few years and then the Georgia Council on Economic Education came calling and I was excited about that opportunity to get back and have sort of a statewide impact.
00:01:03.667 --> 00:01:04.188
Wonderful.
00:01:04.188 --> 00:01:08.388
Can you give us a glimpse into your daily responsibilities with the GCEE?
00:01:08.567 --> 00:01:09.209
Absolutely so.
00:01:09.209 --> 00:01:14.290
As the associate director, my primary responsibility is to make sure we're executing all of our programs.
00:01:14.290 --> 00:01:16.763
So the way the Georgia Council operates is.
00:01:16.763 --> 00:01:24.530
Our mission is to help teachers teach economics and personal finance, and the way we primarily do that are through highly engaging, interactive workshops.
00:01:24.530 --> 00:01:26.614
So you have to schedule those.
00:01:26.614 --> 00:01:32.920
There's a lot of event planning that happens, a lot of marketing, but then there's also the content creation.
00:01:32.920 --> 00:01:36.271
So we have to have something to do at the workshop, obviously.
00:01:36.271 --> 00:01:44.293
So we do a lot of lesson plan writing, curating materials, planning events.
00:01:44.293 --> 00:01:57.793
We take teachers on manufacturing tours and bus tours and it's that kind of stuff and it's trying to make teachers understand that economics is everywhere, it's very accessible and it's exciting and we try to help teachers get excited about it.
00:01:58.174 --> 00:01:58.879
That's wonderful.
00:01:58.879 --> 00:02:04.052
What are some of your big takeaways or big moments that you've had at GCEE that you can share?
00:02:05.844 --> 00:02:06.587
Oh, so many.
00:02:07.221 --> 00:02:18.926
But every summer we do this big week-long institute where we have teachers coming from all over the country and it's not just Georgia teachers who already kind of know us and have an expectation.
00:02:19.560 --> 00:02:23.230
It's teachers who have no professional learning in their state, for economics maybe.
00:02:23.230 --> 00:02:42.155
But they come to this week-long conference and they're just blown away by the way we present economics and the way we approach it and the materials we give them, and it's always so fulfilling because they leave and they're like I wish I had this in my state and you guys did such a great job and that makes all the planning and all that worth it.
00:02:42.155 --> 00:02:44.588
So that's kind of a big repeat thing that happens.
00:02:44.588 --> 00:03:00.423
But the other thing I would say that makes the job really rewarding is just when we come to conferences like this and just the number of people that stop by our table and be like we love what you guys do, thank you so much, and they're so appreciative Because I was that way, and now to be on the other side of it and get to do that for teachers is really cool.
00:03:00.883 --> 00:03:07.693
That is fantastic, and what is your role here is to educate people with the GCSS.
00:03:07.693 --> 00:03:15.186
What are some takeaways you're hoping to get from the conference this year?
00:03:15.206 --> 00:03:16.270
Yeah, so that networking is absolutely critical for us.
00:03:16.270 --> 00:03:18.479
The vast majority of people come to our workshops via word of mouth.
00:03:19.180 --> 00:03:29.830
And so this is the place to come do word of mouth right, but also we make connections with ABC and MRU and other organizations that do very similar stuff to what we do.
00:03:29.830 --> 00:03:41.889
Our biggest partner is the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, so it's cool they're set up right next to us so we can talk to people together and it's that face-to-face conversations with people.
00:03:41.889 --> 00:03:47.623
It helps us get our mission out, but also helps people know who we are and find out about us.
00:03:47.663 --> 00:03:49.688
So that is wonderful, Dr.
00:03:49.688 --> 00:03:50.050
Cannon.
00:03:50.050 --> 00:03:52.122
Is there anything else you'd like to share with the audience?
00:03:52.383 --> 00:03:52.884
Absolutely.
00:03:52.884 --> 00:03:59.348
October is Economic Education Month, econ Ed Month, so you can come get happy Econ Ed Month stickers from us.
00:03:59.348 --> 00:04:09.006
That actually started here in Georgia four years ago and yeah, we're super excited about it and so we're always happy to promote that whenever we can.
00:04:09.006 --> 00:04:14.126
So teach econ, it's everywhere, econ is life, and if you need help, come to the Georgia Council.
00:04:14.126 --> 00:04:14.747
That's why we're here.
00:04:15.169 --> 00:04:15.871
That's awesome.
00:04:15.871 --> 00:04:18.028
Well, you heard it best from Dr.
00:04:18.028 --> 00:04:20.680
Cannon, with the Georgia Council of Economics Education.
00:04:20.680 --> 00:04:23.488
Thank you for being part of ABC's Spotlight for Success.
00:04:23.509 --> 00:04:25.601
Thank you appreciate it.
00:04:25.622 --> 00:04:26.966
Thank you for being part of abc spotlight.
00:04:26.966 --> 00:04:29.857
and we look forward to hearing more from you in the future.
00:04:29.877 --> 00:04:30.358
Absolutely all right.
00:00:03.299 --> 00:00:11.210
00:00:11.210 --> 00:00:14.555
00:00:14.555 --> 00:00:21.969
00:00:21.969 --> 00:00:28.687
00:00:28.687 --> 00:00:30.510
00:00:30.510 --> 00:00:32.484
00:00:32.764 --> 00:00:33.185
00:00:33.185 --> 00:00:34.387
00:00:34.387 --> 00:00:38.546
00:00:38.546 --> 00:00:46.865
00:00:46.865 --> 00:00:47.868
00:00:47.868 --> 00:01:02.945
00:01:03.667 --> 00:01:04.188
00:01:04.188 --> 00:01:08.388
00:01:08.567 --> 00:01:09.209
00:01:09.209 --> 00:01:14.290
00:01:14.290 --> 00:01:16.763
00:01:16.763 --> 00:01:24.530
00:01:24.530 --> 00:01:26.614
00:01:26.614 --> 00:01:32.920
00:01:32.920 --> 00:01:36.271
00:01:36.271 --> 00:01:44.293
00:01:44.293 --> 00:01:57.793
00:01:58.174 --> 00:01:58.879
00:01:58.879 --> 00:02:04.052
00:02:05.844 --> 00:02:06.587
00:02:07.221 --> 00:02:18.926
00:02:19.560 --> 00:02:23.230
00:02:23.230 --> 00:02:42.155
00:02:42.155 --> 00:02:44.588
00:02:44.588 --> 00:03:00.423
00:03:00.883 --> 00:03:07.693
00:03:07.693 --> 00:03:15.186
00:03:15.206 --> 00:03:16.270
00:03:16.270 --> 00:03:18.479
00:03:19.180 --> 00:03:29.830
00:03:29.830 --> 00:03:41.889
00:03:41.889 --> 00:03:47.623
00:03:47.663 --> 00:03:49.688
00:03:49.688 --> 00:03:50.050
00:03:50.050 --> 00:03:52.122
00:03:52.383 --> 00:03:52.884
