00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:04.091
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:04.091 --> 00:00:14.413
We are here at the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics with Marguerite McClam of the National Society of Professional Engineers.
00:00:14.413 --> 00:00:19.390
She is also the leader of the South Carolina Chapter of Math Counts.
00:00:19.390 --> 00:00:20.974
Welcome, Marguerite.
00:00:21.320 --> 00:00:22.506
Thank you for having us here today.
00:00:22.879 --> 00:00:30.492
Yes, we're so happy to have you, and can you tell us some of what you do associated with math counts?
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:44.482
As a professional engineer, we see the need for math being improved in our country and we started math counts 41 years ago to improve the mathematics for the United States citizens Every day.
00:00:44.482 --> 00:00:54.665
Math is something we use as professional engineers to do our job and if we don't improve math for the students that are coming up, they're not prepared to enter the engineering field in college.
00:00:54.665 --> 00:01:04.049
So our goal is to improve math starting with the weakest sixth grader to the strongest eighth grader, providing them with a club program which is absolutely free.
00:01:04.049 --> 00:01:06.963
We register, we send you the materials.
00:01:06.963 --> 00:01:11.302
All you have to have is four kids who are willing to participate that are middle school age.
00:01:11.302 --> 00:01:14.409
They have to meet so many times a month.
00:01:14.409 --> 00:01:16.713
They kind of set their own guidelines.
00:01:16.713 --> 00:01:19.992
They have prizes for themselves, they're just competing against themselves.
00:01:19.992 --> 00:01:32.730
But there's material for the weakest sixth grader up to the most advanced eighth grader, all free of charge to every school, every boys' club, every girls' club, any group, just four neighborhood kids that are middle school age bracket.
00:01:32.730 --> 00:01:44.840
We also have a competition which you start with a school competition, then you advance to a chapter competition and then you advance to state and then eventually on up to national.
00:01:44.840 --> 00:01:46.361
That is a lot more intense.
00:01:46.361 --> 00:01:52.647
It does cost, but the goal is to help develop the brightest and the best, and this program is sponsored.
00:01:52.647 --> 00:02:02.132
The founding sponsors are CNA Insurance, professional Engineering Society, national Society of Professional Engineers and the National Mathematics Teacher's Council.
00:02:03.061 --> 00:02:05.048
We've been doing this, like I said, for 41 years.
00:02:05.048 --> 00:02:08.088
The whole idea is to improve our students and our country.
00:02:08.088 --> 00:02:11.127
We see the advancement of these students.
00:02:11.127 --> 00:02:20.979
Taking a kid who just says this is way out of my league, I can't do this to seeing them become successful the more time they come back and work our problems.
00:02:20.979 --> 00:02:34.106
A prime example is I have a school in one of my chapters who is always the last place team in the chapter and I went to the coach several years ago and said I can switch you to another chapter, so you'll be middle of the pack.
00:02:34.106 --> 00:02:35.751
And she said oh no, you don't understand.
00:02:35.751 --> 00:02:51.152
My kids need to come be on the bottom of the pack because next year they'll be feeding into this school that all these other kids are going to be feeding into and they need to see that they've got to study, because right now they don't open a textbook, they're just cruising along in the top in their school.
00:02:52.205 --> 00:02:54.213
She said the Monday after math counts.
00:02:54.213 --> 00:03:02.032
It's amazing how they open the textbook and start studying because they don't want to be bottom of the totem pole when they advance to the high school the next year.
00:03:02.032 --> 00:03:09.771
So it's taking kids and taking what knowledge they have, what knowledge we can provide to them, and helping them bloom where they're planted.
00:03:09.771 --> 00:03:16.567
A lot of kids fear math.
00:03:16.567 --> 00:03:24.169
A lot of kids love it, but math is just a puzzle, and I'm one of those kids who feared math, but I wanted to be an engineer, so I had to overcome it, and math counts as an adult has helped me overcome that fear.
00:03:25.352 --> 00:03:26.795
That is wonderful M arguerite.
00:03:26.795 --> 00:03:33.197
Can you tell us aome- I think you are there a couple of stories, inspirational stories you can share with us?
00:03:34.164 --> 00:03:44.835
I had a young man who, when he won our state competition, he was brilliant at math but could hardly write his numbers so it could be read.
00:03:44.835 --> 00:04:02.157
And I told him, as an engineer, I have to be very careful that somebody coming behind me reading my blueprints and my plans can read what I'm writing, Because if I don't show my numbers and put all my writing so that people can read it, I may send somebody to the moon when I'm trying to send them to Mars or send them to the sun versus Mars.
00:04:02.157 --> 00:04:12.287
So I spent from basically March to May, when we went to national competition, teaching him how to write zero through nine so it could be read by others.
00:04:12.287 --> 00:04:18.189
Several years later the young man was number one in the world in Math, Olympia International.
00:04:18.850 --> 00:04:25.589
So that is wonderful, what an accomplishment for a kid who brilliant math but could hardly write, so he could read his numbers.
00:04:26.331 --> 00:04:27.834
Wow, that is wonderful.
00:04:27.834 --> 00:04:32.675
And what kind of things are you doing here at the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Math?
00:04:33.324 --> 00:04:36.074
Basically, we're telling teachers about our program.
00:04:36.074 --> 00:04:41.677
We'll be speaking tomorrow to educate teachers about how they can use the program with them.
00:04:41.677 --> 00:04:43.310
They're teaching class.
00:04:43.310 --> 00:04:47.836
A lot of the teachers use our handbook that we prepare as their lesson planning tools.
00:04:47.836 --> 00:05:10.896
There's vocabulary words in there that the kids need to know what they are and we've also learned through the 41 years of experience that if the teachers will use the vocabulary words and include them with their English teachers to help them, they can typically see SAT scores on the English side increase by about 100 points, because the basic of the English language goes back to the same basics of math.
00:05:10.896 --> 00:05:12.826
Math is Greek and Latin.
00:05:12.826 --> 00:05:21.290
The English language is also based upon Latin, so is your Spanish and several other of our languages.
00:05:21.290 --> 00:05:29.307
So if you can learn those vocabulary words, it can help you on the English side of your SAT scores, along with helping you on your math side of SAT scores.
00:05:30.048 --> 00:05:32.069
Wow, that is incredible.
00:05:32.069 --> 00:05:34.011
Well, thank you so much.
00:05:34.011 --> 00:05:40.514
What an amazing story that MathCounts is doing, and in the South Carolina chapter.
00:05:41.396 --> 00:05:43.798
It's all over the nation and we encourage everybody.
00:05:43.798 --> 00:05:47.600
There's one state that actually mandates every school participate in it.
00:05:47.841 --> 00:05:49.060
Wow, that's MathCounts.
00:05:49.060 --> 00:05:50.461
org, is that right?
00:05:50.482 --> 00:05:50.482
Mathcounts.
00:05:50.482 --> 00:05:51.002
org.
00:05:51.704 --> 00:05:52.367
Wonderful.
00:05:52.367 --> 00:06:04.673
Thank you so much for your participation today, Marguerite, and we look forward to hearing more about all of the wonderful success that you're going to be having both at this conference and then beyond working with the teachers.
00:06:05.185 --> 00:06:06.329
Thank you very much for having us.
00:06:06.329 --> 00:06:07.430
We thoroughly enjoyed it.
00:06:07.430 --> 00:06:08.995
Thanks for being here and being a sponsor.
00:06:09.375 --> 00:06:09.757
Thank you.
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:04.091
00:00:04.091 --> 00:00:14.413
00:00:14.413 --> 00:00:19.390
00:00:19.390 --> 00:00:20.974
00:00:21.320 --> 00:00:22.506
00:00:22.879 --> 00:00:30.492
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:44.482
00:00:44.482 --> 00:00:54.665
00:00:54.665 --> 00:01:04.049
00:01:04.049 --> 00:01:06.963
00:01:06.963 --> 00:01:11.302
00:01:11.302 --> 00:01:14.409
00:01:14.409 --> 00:01:16.713
00:01:16.713 --> 00:01:19.992
00:01:19.992 --> 00:01:32.730
00:01:32.730 --> 00:01:44.840
00:01:44.840 --> 00:01:46.361
00:01:46.361 --> 00:01:52.647
00:01:52.647 --> 00:02:02.132
00:02:03.061 --> 00:02:05.048
00:02:05.048 --> 00:02:08.088
00:02:08.088 --> 00:02:11.127
00:02:11.127 --> 00:02:20.979
00:02:20.979 --> 00:02:34.106
00:02:34.106 --> 00:02:35.751
00:02:35.751 --> 00:02:51.152
00:02:52.205 --> 00:02:54.213
00:02:54.213 --> 00:03:02.032
00:03:02.032 --> 00:03:09.771
00:03:09.771 --> 00:03:16.567
00:03:16.567 --> 00:03:24.169
00:03:25.352 --> 00:03:26.795
00:03:26.795 --> 00:03:33.197
00:03:34.164 --> 00:03:44.835
00:03:44.835 --> 00:04:02.157
00:04:02.157 --> 00:04:12.287
00:04:12.287 --> 00:04:18.189
00:04:18.850 --> 00:04:25.589
00:04:26.331 --> 00:04:27.834
00:04:27.834 --> 00:04:32.675
00:04:33.324 --> 00:04:36.074
00:04:36.074 --> 00:04:41.677
00:04:41.677 --> 00:04:43.310
00:04:43.310 --> 00:04:47.836
00:04:47.836 --> 00:05:10.896
00:05:10.896 --> 00:05:12.826
00:05:12.826 --> 00:05:21.290
00:05:21.290 --> 00:05:29.307
00:05:30.048 --> 00:05:32.069
00:05:32.069 --> 00:05:34.011
00:05:34.011 --> 00:05:40.514
00:05:41.396 --> 00:05:43.798
00:05:43.798 --> 00:05:47.600
00:05:47.841 --> 00:05:49.060
00:05:49.060 --> 00:05:50.461
00:05:50.482 --> 00:05:50.482
00:05:50.482 --> 00:05:51.002
00:05:51.704 --> 00:05:52.367
