00:00:01.544 --> 00:00:05.333
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:05.333 --> 00:00:13.563
I am Devin Pintozzi, your host, and we are here at LaCue speaking with Shannon Doughty with Delta Charter Schools.

00:00:13.602 --> 00:00:14.365
Yeah, that's it,

00:00:14.484 --> 00:00:15.227
Welcome, Shannon,

00:00:15.266 --> 00:00:15.829
Thank you.

00:00:15.829 --> 00:00:16.731
Thanks for having me.

00:00:16.951 --> 00:00:17.292
Thank you.

00:00:17.292 --> 00:00:19.687
What brings you to LACUE?

00:00:20.239 --> 00:00:25.679
Well, this is my third year in Louisiana, and so I actually was able to come to LACUE for my third year in Louisiana, and so I actually was able to come to LACUE for my first year.

00:00:25.679 --> 00:00:26.945
So this is my third year.

00:00:26.945 --> 00:00:30.010
I presented last year in an Ignite session.

00:00:30.010 --> 00:00:39.188
I've done some presentations for their summer teacher or their leadership conferences and then applied and was able to come back and present this year.

00:00:39.188 --> 00:00:40.170
So I'm super excited.

00:00:40.651 --> 00:00:41.412
That is wonderful.

00:00:41.412 --> 00:00:44.281
So what is your current role in the school system?

00:00:44.503 --> 00:00:48.786
I'm assistant principal at Delta Charter for the middle school or junior high and high school.

00:00:48.786 --> 00:00:51.668
I'm a retired educator from Mississippi.

00:00:51.668 --> 00:00:53.850
This is my 31st year in education

00:00:54.212 --> 00:00:54.811
Wow.

00:00:54.911 --> 00:00:55.412
Yeah.

00:00:55.552 --> 00:00:59.676
Can you tell us a bit about your experience, why you chose to be an educator?

00:01:05.560 --> 00:01:06.442
Oh gosh, so I always loved children babysat.

00:01:06.442 --> 00:01:11.382
I guess all the way coming through Really couldn't decide between nursing and teaching and honestly the nursing was more for the money, I think, than it was.

00:01:11.382 --> 00:01:19.269
I sometimes wonder oh, nursing, I could have been a great nurse, but I kind of get to do that on a daily basis anyway and not have to do with all the other stuff.

00:01:19.269 --> 00:01:24.668
But once I really honed in into the education, all the scholarships opened up.

00:01:24.668 --> 00:01:27.534
I received the William Winter Scholarship as undergrad.

00:01:27.534 --> 00:01:38.129
My master's degree was paid for through the Mississippi Teacher Fellowship Program and as well that NASA fellowship for my master's and then for my specialist and doctorate.

00:01:38.129 --> 00:01:39.292
I was able to work towards that.

00:01:39.292 --> 00:01:40.887
I did not finish my doctorate.

00:01:40.887 --> 00:01:41.885
My mom passed away.

00:01:41.885 --> 00:01:48.108
I did all the coursework and I tell people all the time life happens but just keep trudging through.

00:01:48.108 --> 00:01:53.546
That's one of the I've never not finished something and so um, but I don't let it.

00:01:53.546 --> 00:01:56.093
I don't dwell on it because I feel like I got the coursework.

00:01:56.600 --> 00:01:59.167
I don't really need the letters to show that I love kids

00:01:59.647 --> 00:01:59.908
Oh sure of course

00:01:59.908 --> 00:02:24.068
You know, and so, but that's one thing that I don't, that I kind of regret not finishing, but in the big picture of things it gave me the opportunity to meet people I would have never met and take courses that I thought I could never be good at, and so it helps me to help students that are struggling like axiomatic geometry, like I don't even know what I learned in that class, but I took it and I passed.

00:02:24.621 --> 00:02:25.844
So it's just things like that.

00:02:25.844 --> 00:02:27.882
When I have a kid struggling algebra, it's like dude.

00:02:27.882 --> 00:02:32.211
I get it like axiomatic geometry, like I feel you.

00:02:32.211 --> 00:02:37.288
But don't give up don't give up you can do it so it did give me that opportunity

00:02:37.949 --> 00:02:38.531
That's great.

00:02:38.531 --> 00:02:43.205
So, uh, so you've had all these uh years and experience working with.

00:02:43.205 --> 00:02:48.335
Do you have a special moment where you felt like, wow, this was like why I got into teaching?

00:02:48.500 --> 00:02:50.847
Oh gosh, there's so many, but one that really sticks out.

00:02:50.847 --> 00:02:56.371
I started out in elementary education, like I shared with you guys earlier, and I taught kindergarten first and sixth grade.

00:02:56.371 --> 00:03:03.670
Then I was coaching cheerleaders and of course they needed me at the high school, so in technology discovery.

00:03:03.670 --> 00:03:06.721
So that was my introduction to technology Y'all.

00:03:06.721 --> 00:03:10.169
I went I'm going to tell my age from DOS to Windows 3.1.

00:03:10.169 --> 00:03:12.883
Okay, did not know how to get.

00:03:12.883 --> 00:03:21.669
I had to have one of my sixth grade kids show me how to get from DOS to Windows and then I taught him in the ninth grade how to troubleshoot and build computers.

00:03:22.151 --> 00:03:22.450
Oh wow,

00:03:22.471 --> 00:03:23.272
How crazy is that.

00:03:23.300 --> 00:03:23.599
That's a circle,

00:03:23.620 --> 00:03:27.242
So in a three-year span, i was North Carolina.

00:03:27.242 --> 00:03:40.131
Explorenet was a company that came and trained me to do that and they filtered into Mississippi and we taught students how to build computers and the governor at the time wanted an Internet-accessible computer in each classroom.

00:03:40.131 --> 00:03:41.171
My kids built them.

00:03:41.171 --> 00:03:57.756
But one of the things was one of my students who struggled was taking my course and he just wasn't sure Like he was struggling with English, and at that time kids had to pass their English and math subject area test to stay in my program.

00:03:58.337 --> 00:04:02.628
Well, he was struggling on those exams and so he didn't want to leave my program.

00:04:02.628 --> 00:04:11.286
He wanted to stay for second year and so I looked at my guidance counselor and my administrator at the time and I said if I can't get him to where he needs to be, then I'm not the teacher I need to be.

00:04:11.286 --> 00:04:12.929
So I kept in that second year.

00:04:12.929 --> 00:04:18.045
He passed both of his tests and he currently works in the networking world of computers.

00:04:18.045 --> 00:04:25.470
So that's one that really sticks out with me like don't ever judge a kid by a test score.

00:04:25.470 --> 00:04:29.341
We can work on them and push them through, and so that taught me a lot that year

00:04:29.742 --> 00:04:30.545
Oh, that is fantastic.

00:04:30.545 --> 00:04:31.488
It was amazing.

00:04:31.819 --> 00:04:33.447
So that's why I say don't judge me by my GRE.

00:04:33.447 --> 00:04:36.988
Like you know, the hard work comes along with it.

00:04:37.701 --> 00:04:38.425
It sure does.

00:04:38.425 --> 00:04:43.108
Well, I appreciate your passion to get the kids through and make sure that they achieve

00:04:43.370 --> 00:04:43.709
Yeah.

00:04:43.709 --> 00:04:44.913
I truly love what I do.

00:04:44.913 --> 00:04:45.733
I'm very blessed.

00:04:46.199 --> 00:04:51.432
That is wonderful, and so your here at LACUE, so you're presenting.

00:04:51.853 --> 00:04:56.187
I am, so today I'm talking a little bit about health and wellness.

00:04:56.187 --> 00:04:58.398
I'm also a personal trainer and fitness instructor in our local area.

00:04:58.418 --> 00:04:58.478
Wow.

00:04:59.661 --> 00:05:01.685
And so what we try to do.

00:05:01.685 --> 00:05:07.548
I work also and help out with a Miss Lou Champion Spotlight, which we do an educational kind of spotlight each week.

00:05:07.548 --> 00:05:16.312
But we also focus on wellness Wednesdays, and so I help put out just the little thing on Facebook and Instagram little tidbits when you know Wednesday tip of the day.

00:05:16.312 --> 00:05:22.124
And we also do it at school, but it was implemented before I got there, but we just taken it up a notch with the kids.

00:05:22.124 --> 00:05:29.228
So we have like a storm advisory team and they get together and the kids now give you the tips of Wednesdays at school.

00:05:29.228 --> 00:05:37.651
But it's just focusing on how you can use AI for health and wellness, but then also know the balance between checking yourself out of technology too.

00:05:37.651 --> 00:05:41.911
So we're just going to talk about the balance of kids as well as taking care of ourselves.

00:05:41.911 --> 00:05:43.867
I think we take good care of our kids.

00:05:43.867 --> 00:05:45.185
We don't take care of ourselves.

00:05:45.185 --> 00:05:48.247
So we're going to focus a little bit on that today.

00:05:48.668 --> 00:05:50.521
Oh good, Everybody's going to be moving around.

00:05:52.922 --> 00:05:54.463
Yeah, we're going to be moving around a little bit.

00:05:54.483 --> 00:05:57.663
That's awesome, Shannon, and is there anything you'd like to share with the LACUE community?

00:05:58.464 --> 00:06:01.146
Just thankful for LACUE, especially.

00:06:01.146 --> 00:06:06.769
Coming in as a new educator in the state of Louisiana the first year I came made me feel very welcomed.

00:06:06.769 --> 00:06:14.293
I was able to network and meet a lot of people that I'm now working alongside and just very excited about that.

00:06:14.293 --> 00:06:24.098
So just grateful for the opportunity to network they give you plenty of time to do that and then to also kind of have believed in me, to give me the opportunity to share what I love with fellow educators.

00:06:25.420 --> 00:06:26.360
Oh, that's wonderful.

00:06:26.360 --> 00:06:29.521
Once again, Shannon Doughty with Delta Charter Schools.

00:06:29.802 --> 00:06:31.322
Thank you so much for being part of us.

00:06:31.322 --> 00:06:32.584
Thanks for letting us sit and hang out.

00:06:32.764 --> 00:06:33.725
Yes, this is great.

00:06:33.764 --> 00:06:35.045
Have a great day you too.

00:06:35.045 --> 00:06:35.605
Thanks again.
