How a British Commander's Threat Ignited a Revolutionary Turning Point

How a British Commander's Threat Ignited a Revolutionary Turning Point

David Doan of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association takes us back to 1780, when the Revolutionary War had reached a stalemate and the British implemented their Southern Strategy. What followed was an extraordinary grassroots military campaign as the previously neutral Overmountain Men mustered at Fort Watauga and marched to confront Ferguson's forces. The resulting Battle of Kings Mountain lasted just 65 minutes but eliminated one-third of British forces in the South—a devastating blow that altered the course of the war.

Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.595 --> 00:00:11.387
I'm Devin Pintosi, your host.

00:00:11.387 --> 00:00:16.492
We are here in wonderful Gatlinburg, tennessee, at the Tennessee Council of Social Studies.

00:00:16.492 --> 00:00:24.231
We are here today with our wonderful guest, david Doan, who is part of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association.

00:00:24.711 --> 00:00:27.963
Welcome, david, thank you Very glad to be here with you.

00:00:28.204 --> 00:00:29.169
Wonderful Thank you.

00:00:29.169 --> 00:00:32.889
Tell us about your work with the Overmountain Victory.

00:00:32.948 --> 00:00:33.310
Trail.

00:00:33.310 --> 00:00:44.546
Okay, the Overmountain Victory Trail is an organization dedicated to telling the story of the Battle of Kings Mountain and that battle took place october 7, 1780.

00:00:44.546 --> 00:00:58.125
But there's a lot of history it leads up to it, to cause it to happen, and it's been said that particular battle is a turning point in the southern strategy of the revolutionary war.

00:00:58.125 --> 00:01:01.213
So there's a lot of history involved in it.

00:01:01.213 --> 00:01:16.281
Our organization, back in 1974 there were two men in Boone, north Carolina, talking about Appalachian history and they said we need to talk about this march to Kings Mountain.

00:01:16.281 --> 00:01:17.643
So they started studying it.

00:01:17.643 --> 00:01:36.048
So in 1975, they did the first march and they followed the same dates that the original march, which was they mustered in at Sycamore Shoals At that time it was Fort Watauga and mustered in there.

00:01:36.219 --> 00:01:50.308
The next day they left and started hunting Major Patrick Ferguson, who was the British officer who had sent a threat to Colonel Shelby that caused us to get so upset to go over and start fighting because we'd been staying out of the war.

00:01:50.308 --> 00:01:52.564
We were over.

00:01:52.564 --> 00:01:59.671
Here wasn't supposed to be and we had tried to stay out of it.

00:01:59.671 --> 00:02:05.569
Yes, some of us would go over and fight some, but we got the threat that they would.

00:02:05.569 --> 00:02:18.330
Ferguson said if you don't lay down your arms and pledge your allegiance back to the crown, I'll march my army across the mountain and hang your leaders Wow and lay waste to your crops and farmland with fire and sword.

00:02:18.330 --> 00:02:25.193
Well, my commander, who would have been Colonel Shelby, he didn't like that.

00:02:25.193 --> 00:02:35.512
So he goes and talks to Colonel John Sevier and they said we don't want him over here at all, we'll just go over there and find him and we'll take care of it one way or the other, him or us.

00:02:35.512 --> 00:02:37.747
So that's what started it all.

00:02:38.659 --> 00:02:45.430
Well, these two men got to thinking about all this history that they tried to teach and said this is a very, very important story.

00:02:45.430 --> 00:02:57.372
So they sat down and looked up all the information, which wasn't a lot, to put together a march to commemorate this battle.

00:02:57.372 --> 00:03:05.033
So they put it together, followed the same days that they were at certain points on that date, 1780.

00:03:05.033 --> 00:03:11.451
Well, also, when they got into it, they decided this ought to be a historic trail.

00:03:11.451 --> 00:03:34.168
So they started working with Congress in order to try to make one and they tied into at that time he was representative, but we all know him today as Senator Roy Hill out of North Carolina, who was also thinking about it at the same time, so working with him and other people as well.

00:03:34.168 --> 00:03:41.235
They pushed for about five years until Jimmy Carter signed it into a bill in 1980.

00:03:42.723 --> 00:03:44.008
Oh, and what happened with that bill?

00:03:44.008 --> 00:03:44.963
What was?

00:03:44.984 --> 00:03:45.445
the result.

00:03:45.445 --> 00:03:56.948
The bill signed it into being a National Historic Trail, wow, which also was the first historic trail this side of the Mississippi River, wow.

00:03:56.948 --> 00:04:03.105
There were trails west, but we were the first historic trail this side of the Mississippi River.

00:04:03.105 --> 00:04:05.367
There were some recreational trails.

00:04:06.401 --> 00:04:07.225
It's not historic.

00:04:07.621 --> 00:04:09.788
That's another importance and significance in it.

00:04:09.788 --> 00:04:20.949
Also, we found out a few years ago that when Congress signed this off, then they assigned our organization to be the storytellers.

00:04:20.949 --> 00:04:22.985
That's what we've done.

00:04:22.985 --> 00:04:27.016
It's since 1975 anyway, that's wonderful.

00:04:27.680 --> 00:04:28.161
That's wonderful.

00:04:28.161 --> 00:04:29.487
How big is your organization now?

00:04:30.331 --> 00:04:34.444
At American Book Company in Woodstock, georgia, we are committed to your students' success.

00:04:34.444 --> 00:04:42.031
As you can see behind me, we have our workbooks and we have online testing and e-books that go on fancy iPads over here, for instance.

00:04:42.031 --> 00:04:48.048
They're all designed to help your students succeed and have higher test scores on their high stakes assessments.

00:04:48.048 --> 00:04:59.142
Give us a call 888-264-5877, or find us on the web, abck12.com, and you can receive a free trial or a free preview book of your choice.

00:04:59.142 --> 00:05:00.889
Hope to hear from you soon.

00:05:00.889 --> 00:05:01.391
Bye-bye.

00:05:03.778 --> 00:05:08.928
Well, our active membership is somewhere around 250, almost 300.

00:05:08.928 --> 00:05:11.322
We have had more than that.

00:05:11.322 --> 00:05:18.745
Our contact list is over 1,000 people we do contacts with that sometimes tie in for certain different things.

00:05:18.745 --> 00:05:26.488
The main core, of course, is, like most organizations, about 15, 20 of us.

00:05:26.488 --> 00:05:31.303
It's really the hardcore ones always out there promoting this.

00:05:31.303 --> 00:05:32.596
Our board.

00:05:32.596 --> 00:05:35.942
Right now I think it's 21 members on the board out of 25.

00:05:35.942 --> 00:05:37.065
Oh, okay.

00:05:37.987 --> 00:05:38.569
That's wonderful.

00:05:38.569 --> 00:05:43.166
Sounds like a pretty active group working to keep that historical trail up and running.

00:05:43.475 --> 00:05:49.117
And we do have one director in California that kind of oversees this oh okay, trail up and running.

00:05:49.117 --> 00:05:54.232
And we do have one director in california to kind of overseas oh okay, he's been out in this world of of how do I promote this stuff to?

00:05:54.232 --> 00:05:55.014
Other people, oh, there we go.

00:05:55.014 --> 00:06:00.567
So that's how we ended up putting him on there with the knowledge he had yes, oh, that's great, david.

00:06:00.675 --> 00:06:05.666
That's something we're hoping to do here with the tcss community, so, um, that's wonderful.

00:06:05.666 --> 00:06:32.360
I hope that, uh, you have a lot of success uh going forward, uh, with more membership and, uh, it sounds like a crucial battle uh, in the southern, like you said, the southern strategy for the british as well as for the colonists yeah, when we went over and found ferguson, battle lasted one hour and five minutes and Ferguson lay dead and that was one-third of the British force in the South.

00:06:32.601 --> 00:06:33.083
Wow.

00:06:34.365 --> 00:06:35.906
That's huge, that's huge.

00:06:36.928 --> 00:06:46.509
Of course you know, the Revolutionary War started in 1775, roughly, and until 1780, it had grown to a stalemate.

00:06:46.509 --> 00:06:47.122
And the British come up with a new concept.

00:06:47.122 --> 00:06:59.995
Until 1780 and it had grown to a stalemate the British had come up with a new concept, a new idea that if we go south I mean they had military in the south, but they didn't do a lot of fighting until 1780.

00:06:59.995 --> 00:07:06.262
They said if we go down there in the south, we believe we can rally people back to the king.

00:07:06.262 --> 00:07:21.649
And so they come down and found out no, you got in the wrong group of people and you threatened the wrong group there when you threatened the over mountain man, because we have, we like to say you ain't the boss of me there you go.

00:07:22.697 --> 00:07:34.901
That's what founded this country yes, and this with the problems we had with the flooding in our mountains both sides of the mountains.

00:07:34.901 --> 00:07:42.165
We got to looking at each other and we realized our group was still the same as they were that day.

00:07:42.165 --> 00:07:45.744
Wow, we're still just about as independent.

00:07:46.475 --> 00:07:47.300
Ah, there you go.

00:07:49.416 --> 00:07:50.963
But we work together good.

00:07:51.846 --> 00:07:52.911
That's great Good group.

00:07:52.911 --> 00:07:56.865
Is there anything you'd like to say to the TCSS community or a?

00:07:56.906 --> 00:07:57.226
message.

00:07:57.226 --> 00:08:03.392
The one thing I might add that I haven't said is we do partner with the National Park Service.

00:08:03.733 --> 00:08:05.721
Okay, and we do a lot of things with them.

00:08:05.721 --> 00:08:17.824
The trail was assigned to the National Park Service to oversee the trail, but we, our organization, of course.

00:08:17.824 --> 00:08:21.600
When we do the march we tell a story all the way from.

00:08:21.600 --> 00:08:33.421
We really start in Abington, virginia, down into Tennessee Elizabethan area and then cross over the mountain and go all the way down into South Carolina to Kings Mountain, which is below Charlotte.

00:08:33.421 --> 00:08:43.485
And when we do the march we'll tell public stories, public programs, and we talk to all the school systems along the way.

00:08:43.485 --> 00:08:47.244
Oh, wow, so we tie in the school system for that.

00:08:47.244 --> 00:08:51.706
We also do the same thing during the year.

00:08:51.706 --> 00:09:01.740
So that's one reason we came down here, so we can talk to more teachers and say, hey, we're willing to come out and do a program, come out and tell you about Kings Mountain.

00:09:01.740 --> 00:09:06.274
Oh, by the way, while we're there, you'll see something about some colonial skills.

00:09:06.274 --> 00:09:07.078
We can bring you a bunch of them too.

00:09:07.078 --> 00:09:08.785
Oh, by the way, while we're there, you'll see something about some colonial skills.

00:09:08.806 --> 00:09:09.649
We can bring you a bunch of them too.

00:09:09.649 --> 00:09:10.634
Oh, that's wonderful, that's great.

00:09:10.634 --> 00:09:12.020
What's the name of your website?

00:09:12.020 --> 00:09:25.581
Ovtaorg, ovtaorg Y'all check it out, check it out, and you may see some great things there about the work that they've done and some historical resources I imagine they can use in their classrooms.

00:09:25.961 --> 00:09:27.683
We do have some videos we can share.

00:09:27.683 --> 00:09:30.166
We have other bits of information and things like that.

00:09:30.426 --> 00:09:31.326
Okay, that's great.

00:09:31.326 --> 00:09:32.807
Once again, david Doan.

00:09:32.807 --> 00:09:35.451
Overland Victory Trail Association.

00:09:35.451 --> 00:09:41.678
Thank you so much for joining us today All right thank you, thank you.
