00:00:01.842 --> 00:00:11.295
This podcast, Spotlight for Success, is our way of highlighting the incredible success stories happening in education right here in our home state of Georgia.
00:00:11.295 --> 00:00:22.774
Today, we're thrilled to be joined by Kelly Theodocion, who has made a significant impact in the field of social studies education.
00:00:22.774 --> 00:00:31.089
We'll explore her journey, insights and the positive changes she's creating in Henry County for students and teachers.
00:00:31.089 --> 00:00:32.292
So let's get started.
00:00:32.292 --> 00:00:35.945
So, Kelly, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
00:00:37.148 --> 00:00:40.975
Yes, I am a 29-year teaching veteran.
00:00:40.975 --> 00:00:44.948
I started teaching as a second career.
00:00:44.948 --> 00:00:47.512
My first career was in journalism.
00:00:47.512 --> 00:00:52.832
I was a sports writer for the local newspaper here in Athens, the Athens Daily News.
00:00:52.832 --> 00:00:53.493
Banner Herald.
00:00:53.979 --> 00:00:54.100
Wow.
00:00:54.140 --> 00:01:02.064
So I covered Georgia sports, high school sports, did that for five years and then made the transition into teaching.
00:01:02.064 --> 00:01:14.387
My teaching career was 29 years, all with Henry County Schools at the primarily at the middle school level, and then I moved into the high school level English Language Arts and US History.
00:01:15.149 --> 00:01:19.840
Okay, and did you see connections between Language Arts and Social Studies?
00:01:20.262 --> 00:01:21.003
Oh, absolutely.
00:01:21.003 --> 00:01:28.275
That was really powerful when we could bring the two into the social studies classroom.
00:01:28.275 --> 00:01:38.930
We talk a lot about getting kids to think like a historian and do the work of historian, and writing to me is evidence of your thinking.
00:01:38.930 --> 00:01:55.057
And so when students are reading source material, discussing source material, writing about it evidence of their thinking and then having the discourse around that, that's really where the social studies becomes real for them.
00:02:00.046 --> 00:02:00.906
That is wonderful, Kelley.
00:02:00.906 --> 00:02:12.211
Of your career in the classroom did you have any special moments or something like a milestone or something that happened, an achievement or an experience that was like a wow moment for you?
00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:13.561
Absolutely.
00:02:13.561 --> 00:02:26.413
We have been blessed in Henry County with just amazing leadership, and a former coordinator of social studies brought to us a program called National History Day.
00:02:26.413 --> 00:02:30.349
National History Day is a research endeavor.
00:02:30.349 --> 00:02:33.968
It's a- I think it's been around for almost 50 years.
00:02:33.968 --> 00:02:39.449
Yeah, I think they did celebrate their 50th anniversary and they have a booth here at the conference.
00:02:39.920 --> 00:02:41.888
So I'm excited to visit with them again.
00:02:41.888 --> 00:02:47.368
But basically every year they have a theme, and this year's theme is rights and responsibilities.
00:02:47.368 --> 00:02:54.514
And then students have an opportunity to choose something from history.
00:02:54.514 --> 00:02:59.412
There has to be at least a 25-year time difference to make it historical.
00:02:59.412 --> 00:03:09.052
And then they dive into the primary secondary source material and then they can create either a website or a documentary.
00:03:09.052 --> 00:03:18.711
They can write historical paper, they can do a stage performance to present their findings and a quick story of this in action.
00:03:19.259 --> 00:03:24.472
One year we took students downtown Atlanta to the Center for Human and Civil Rights.
00:03:29.568 --> 00:03:33.181
And when you go on a field trip with a large group of students, you break them off into small groups and then a chaperone walks with these small groups.
00:03:33.181 --> 00:03:40.864
When we got back to the school I wanted to check in with the whole group just to get a feel for what they saw and if they had questions.
00:03:40.864 --> 00:04:14.223
And it became apparent very quickly that my eighth graders were not aware that young white men and women college age in their role of the civil rights movement, because they saw a picture of a lunch counter sit-in from Jackson Mississippi where it's two college-age girls, one white, one black and their teacher, and they are at the lunch counter and there's a crowd behind them pouring, you know, condiments on them and such, and this picture.
00:04:14.223 --> 00:04:17.050
They just wanted to know more about it.
00:04:17.050 --> 00:04:26.805
Well, that led into some questions and they said well, we want to know more about the lady who has her head turned from the camera.
00:04:26.805 --> 00:04:27.687
We can't see her face.
00:04:27.687 --> 00:04:33.163
Well, a quick Google search and we discovered her name Joan Mulholland.
00:04:33.163 --> 00:04:38.233
And then we read a little bit about her and she's still alive.
00:04:39.961 --> 00:04:41.064
And then I said you know what?
00:04:41.064 --> 00:04:43.531
Now I took the lead on this part.
00:04:43.531 --> 00:04:48.416
I said let me see if there's anything on social media about Joan Mulholland.
00:04:48.416 --> 00:05:02.894
Well, I found a page on Facebook, the Joan Mulholland Facebook page, and I said girls, I'm going to send a message to this Facebook page and to see if we can talk to Joan.
00:05:02.894 --> 00:05:14.591
Well, within an hour I got the little alert button message back and it was a message from her son and he said absolutely, my mother loves to talk to students.
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:29.252
We scheduled a time for I called the girl's mother, I called the mother of the two girls and explained what was happening and I said hey, the son of John Mulholland wants to get in touch with you all.
00:05:29.252 --> 00:05:37.821
Well, later that night, the mother of the girls my students calls me and she says are you sitting down?
00:05:37.821 --> 00:05:39.244
I was like what happened?
00:05:39.244 --> 00:05:39.704
What happened?
00:05:39.704 --> 00:05:45.740
The son had called them and said hey, um, I live in Utah.
00:05:45.740 --> 00:05:50.555
My mom lives in Washington DC area, but she happens to be here with me visiting.
00:05:50.555 --> 00:05:51.399
Would you rather?
00:05:51.399 --> 00:05:54.086
Would you, would you want to ask some questions of Joan right now?
00:05:54.086 --> 00:06:09.665
And so, on the spur of the moment they had, you know, they got some questions together and it gives me chills thinking about how that photograph that they noticed in that museum led them to go and read about Joan.
00:06:09.665 --> 00:06:16.153
And then we found a way to reach out to Joan and then Joan got-
00:06:16.173 --> 00:06:17.076
We got in touch with Joan.
00:06:17.076 --> 00:06:33.764
So long story short, they ended up doing a um a stage performance about Joan's life and connecting what Joan did in the early 1960s to things happening today and the parallels.
00:06:33.764 --> 00:06:49.675
And then, to kind of put a finishing point on the story, joan had a documentary that her son made and they were touring the state of Georgia going to colleges, and Joan calls us and said hey, I'm going to be in Milledgeville next week.
00:06:49.675 --> 00:06:51.797
Would you all be able to come down?
00:06:51.797 --> 00:06:52.536
I'd love to meet you.
00:06:52.536 --> 00:06:53.478
And so the girls met her.
00:06:54.439 --> 00:06:57.947
Wow, what an amazing story that you know.
00:06:57.947 --> 00:07:01.985
It's like taking history and just taking it right out of the book and bringing it to real life.
00:07:01.985 --> 00:07:10.442
You know, or from the museum, you know from that place of learning, and then now it's becoming an encounter With history.
00:07:10.442 --> 00:07:14.591
Wow that is a wow moment.
00:07:16.721 --> 00:07:20.170
And those stories that aren't in the textbooks.
00:07:20.170 --> 00:07:36.071
You know those unknown stories but key players and stories, they deserve a spotlight on it.
00:07:36.071 --> 00:07:39.915
How it exciting that no matter the age of our young students, they can be the historians to bring those stories to light.
00:07:40.579 --> 00:07:42.286
That is amazing.
00:07:42.286 --> 00:07:49.814
Wow, what a thing to share regarding students and the classroom experience like that.
00:07:49.814 --> 00:07:50.985
That is wonderful.
00:07:50.985 --> 00:08:00.130
Let me ask you so, now you've done this wonderful teaching, bringing these moments, and now you have a new role in Henry County.
00:08:00.901 --> 00:08:03.228
I do have a new role After 29 years.
00:08:03.228 --> 00:08:21.509
I did retire from classroom teaching, but I most definitely wanted to pursue other roles in the profession, and so now, with Henry County Schools, I'm part of a team that supports novice teachers who are moving into our profession from another career.
00:08:21.509 --> 00:08:53.809
So they have not gone to college for education coursework, they've not had student teaching experiences, but they have a four-year degree, which means that they can come into teaching, and then there are some certification steps that that they start going through, but then I serve um, the title is a coach, but, truth be told, I'm learning just as much from them as they are for me, and so I go into all these coaching conversations.
00:08:53.809 --> 00:08:56.631
It's a true partnership and so.
00:08:56.631 --> 00:09:08.614
But basically I'm there to not just encourage but to model teaching strategies so that they can start to move the needle on their teaching practice.
00:09:09.140 --> 00:09:09.522
That's wonderful.
00:09:09.522 --> 00:09:11.145
You're taking on a new cohort of teachers that are entering the profession.
00:09:11.145 --> 00:09:11.827
Absolutely, that is wonderful, joan.
00:09:11.827 --> 00:09:14.315
What a great on a new cohort of teachers that are entering the profession.
00:09:14.315 --> 00:09:18.767
Absolutely, that is wonderful, joan, what a great thing to be part of.
00:09:18.767 --> 00:09:32.427
Now I'd like to ask you know we're here at the Georgia Council of Social Studies, so is there anything interesting you're finding here or a connection or a special thing?
00:09:32.427 --> 00:09:41.831
I know you mentioned the Atlanta History event that day, but is there anything else here that has sparked your interest?
00:09:42.272 --> 00:09:44.524
Absolutely Most of my well.
00:09:44.524 --> 00:10:16.011
My teaching background was middle and high school, so I am zeroing in on the sessions geared to kinder through fifth grade looking for sessions that talk about boosting engagement, active learning and those sorts of things, and so that's where my focus is today but also learning from the thought leaders of our field, from not just the state of Georgia but from around the region, and really absorbing and taking advantage of all this expertise and brilliance.
00:10:16.653 --> 00:10:17.754
That is wonderful, Joan.
00:10:17.754 --> 00:10:21.029
Is there anything else you'd like to share with the education community today?
00:10:22.061 --> 00:10:26.072
Well, I just want to thank the organizers of this event.
00:10:26.072 --> 00:10:31.131
If you're listening, and I encourage you to put it on your schedule for next year.
00:10:31.131 --> 00:10:33.027
We're in Athens.
00:10:33.027 --> 00:10:35.562
It's a great facility, it's just.
00:10:35.562 --> 00:10:38.489
I wish it could go on more days.
00:10:39.552 --> 00:10:39.913
Wonderful.
00:10:40.220 --> 00:10:47.326
A lot to learn, but yeah, it's a great event and I'm thankful to be here and to meet you all.
00:10:47.707 --> 00:11:00.056
Wonderful Well, thank you, joan Theodosian, a friend and a wonderful educator at Henry County Schools.
00:11:00.056 --> 00:11:14.129
Again, this is ABC's Spotlight for Success and, joan, we look forward to seeing you in the future and learning more about the new things you're involved with, and I hope you have a great rest of the conference.
00:11:14.561 --> 00:11:15.888
Thank you so much, it was a delight.
00:00:01.842 --> 00:00:11.295
00:00:11.295 --> 00:00:22.774
00:00:22.774 --> 00:00:31.089
00:00:31.089 --> 00:00:32.292
00:00:32.292 --> 00:00:35.945
00:00:37.148 --> 00:00:40.975
00:00:40.975 --> 00:00:44.948
00:00:44.948 --> 00:00:47.512
00:00:47.512 --> 00:00:52.832
00:00:52.832 --> 00:00:53.493
00:00:53.979 --> 00:00:54.100
00:00:54.140 --> 00:01:02.064
00:01:02.064 --> 00:01:14.387
00:01:15.149 --> 00:01:19.840
00:01:20.262 --> 00:01:21.003
00:01:21.003 --> 00:01:28.275
00:01:28.275 --> 00:01:38.930
00:01:38.930 --> 00:01:55.057
00:02:00.046 --> 00:02:00.906
00:02:00.906 --> 00:02:12.211
00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:13.561
00:02:13.561 --> 00:02:26.413
00:02:26.413 --> 00:02:30.349
00:02:30.349 --> 00:02:33.968
00:02:33.968 --> 00:02:39.449
00:02:39.920 --> 00:02:41.888
00:02:41.888 --> 00:02:47.368
00:02:47.368 --> 00:02:54.514
00:02:54.514 --> 00:02:59.412
00:02:59.412 --> 00:03:09.052
00:03:09.052 --> 00:03:18.711
00:03:19.259 --> 00:03:24.472
00:03:29.568 --> 00:03:33.181
00:03:33.181 --> 00:03:40.864
00:03:40.864 --> 00:04:14.223
00:04:14.223 --> 00:04:17.050
00:04:17.050 --> 00:04:26.805
00:04:26.805 --> 00:04:27.687
00:04:27.687 --> 00:04:33.163
00:04:33.163 --> 00:04:38.233
00:04:39.961 --> 00:04:41.064
00:04:41.064 --> 00:04:43.531
00:04:43.531 --> 00:04:48.416
00:04:48.416 --> 00:05:02.894
00:05:02.894 --> 00:05:14.591
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:29.252
00:05:29.252 --> 00:05:37.821
00:05:37.821 --> 00:05:39.244
00:05:39.244 --> 00:05:39.704
00:05:39.704 --> 00:05:45.740
00:05:45.740 --> 00:05:50.555
00:05:50.555 --> 00:05:51.399
00:05:51.399 --> 00:05:54.086
00:05:54.086 --> 00:06:09.665
00:06:09.665 --> 00:06:16.153
00:06:16.173 --> 00:06:17.076
00:06:17.076 --> 00:06:33.764
00:06:33.764 --> 00:06:49.675
00:06:49.675 --> 00:06:51.797
00:06:51.797 --> 00:06:52.536
00:06:52.536 --> 00:06:53.478
00:06:54.439 --> 00:06:57.947
00:06:57.947 --> 00:07:01.985
00:07:01.985 --> 00:07:10.442
00:07:10.442 --> 00:07:14.591
00:07:16.721 --> 00:07:20.170
00:07:20.170 --> 00:07:36.071
00:07:36.071 --> 00:07:39.915
00:07:40.579 --> 00:07:42.286
00:07:42.286 --> 00:07:49.814
00:07:49.814 --> 00:07:50.985
00:07:50.985 --> 00:08:00.130
00:08:00.901 --> 00:08:03.228
00:08:03.228 --> 00:08:21.509
00:08:21.509 --> 00:08:53.809
00:08:53.809 --> 00:08:56.631
00:08:56.631 --> 00:09:08.614
00:09:09.140 --> 00:09:09.522
00:09:09.522 --> 00:09:11.145
00:09:11.145 --> 00:09:11.827
00:09:11.827 --> 00:09:14.315
00:09:14.315 --> 00:09:18.767
00:09:18.767 --> 00:09:32.427
00:09:32.427 --> 00:09:41.831
00:09:42.272 --> 00:09:44.524
00:09:44.524 --> 00:10:16.011
00:10:16.653 --> 00:10:17.754
00:10:17.754 --> 00:10:21.029
00:10:22.061 --> 00:10:26.072
00:10:26.072 --> 00:10:31.131
00:10:31.131 --> 00:10:33.027
00:10:33.027 --> 00:10:35.562
00:10:35.562 --> 00:10:38.489
00:10:39.552 --> 00:10:39.913
00:10:40.220 --> 00:10:47.326
00:10:47.707 --> 00:11:00.056
00:11:00.056 --> 00:11:14.129
00:11:14.561 --> 00:11:15.888
