WEBVTT

00:00:06.347 --> 00:00:15.416
This podcast Spotlight for Success, is our way of highlighting the incredible success stories happening in education right here in our home state of Georgia.

00:00:15.416 --> 00:00:24.214
Today, we're thrilled to be joined by Alicia Gentle in Mutz County Schools, who has made a significant impact in the field of social studies education.

00:00:24.214 --> 00:00:29.370
We'll explore her journey, insights and positive changes she's creating for students and teachers.

00:00:29.370 --> 00:00:30.312
So let's get started.

00:00:30.312 --> 00:00:33.368
Alicia, tell us a little bit about yourself.

00:00:34.460 --> 00:00:45.930
Well, I'm a wife, I'm a mother of four amazing kids One in college, one's a senior, one's a junior and one is in eighth grade.

00:00:45.930 --> 00:00:54.313
So love teaching, love traveling, camping, volleyball, soccer you know all the mom stuff.

00:00:54.901 --> 00:00:57.828
That's great, and what inspired you?

00:00:57.828 --> 00:00:59.231
To pursue a career in teaching.

00:01:00.441 --> 00:01:12.707
Well, initially, I'll be honest, I went into teaching because my oldest daughter was going into middle school and I was like middle school is scary, so I want to be there when she goes.

00:01:12.707 --> 00:01:30.510
So I just started subbing in the school just to be present and then I was like I really like this and I could see like the positive impact that teachers were making on students and I was like I want that to be me, and so from there I started.

00:01:30.510 --> 00:01:31.996
I became a paraprofessional

00:01:32.016 --> 00:01:32.540
Wonderful.

00:01:32.579 --> 00:01:38.600
And so I was a para for four years while I got my degree, and then after that I started teaching middle grades, and I've been.

00:01:38.600 --> 00:01:46.864
I started in the same middle school that I'm still in now, loved it, the same middle school that I'm still in now.

00:01:46.884 --> 00:01:48.971
Gosh, that's wonderful, loved it Good, strong roots there.

00:01:48.990 --> 00:01:49.371
Yes, love it there.

00:01:49.391 --> 00:01:49.834
That's great.

00:01:49.834 --> 00:01:53.042
So now, what is the most rewarding part of your work in the school system?

00:01:54.484 --> 00:01:56.308
Seeing a child get it.

00:01:56.308 --> 00:02:04.876
It's the aha moments when they just they don't understand, and you can see them struggle through, and I think struggle is important.

00:02:04.876 --> 00:02:17.151
It's important because the struggle makes them who they are, it defines them, it, like you said, it plants roots for them, and so when they struggle through and then they get it, it's rewarding.

00:02:17.151 --> 00:02:20.046
They feel accomplished, and when they feel accomplished, I feel accomplished.

00:02:20.748 --> 00:02:21.631
That is wonderful.

00:02:21.631 --> 00:02:22.842
Yeah, what kind of a school.

00:02:22.842 --> 00:02:24.667
So you're in a middle school, what's the name of your school?

00:02:24.788 --> 00:02:26.391
Henderson Middle School in Butts County,

00:02:26.620 --> 00:02:27.264
Henderson Middle School.

00:02:27.264 --> 00:02:34.473
Wonderful, and so what do you love now that you're here at the Georgia Council of Social Studies?

00:02:34.473 --> 00:02:36.385
What do you love about the conference?

00:02:36.385 --> 00:02:37.209
What have you picked up?

00:02:39.260 --> 00:02:42.090
Because technology is huge today.

00:02:42.169 --> 00:02:42.491
Okay.

00:02:42.939 --> 00:02:46.103
The AI stuff and the students.

00:02:46.103 --> 00:02:52.427
They know it, they're learning it, we have to learn it and we have to stay one step ahead of them.

00:02:52.427 --> 00:02:54.028
We have to use it and integrate.

00:02:54.028 --> 00:03:03.116
We have to be to change to fit today, students today are not like back when we were in school.

00:03:03.116 --> 00:03:30.091
So I think it's important and a lot of the sessions have given teachers the tools to be able to do that and to be able to use these things that the students are into for rigor, for engagement and to help them, you know, to advance in the classroom and there's different ways and different content that I've seen in different.

00:03:30.091 --> 00:03:31.245
It's not just social studies.

00:03:31.245 --> 00:03:37.365
They've used science, they used ELA and so it's really good across the board being able to use those tools.

00:03:37.926 --> 00:03:38.468
Wonderful.

00:03:38.468 --> 00:03:40.699
Do you have any specific takeaways?

00:03:40.699 --> 00:03:43.789
Like I'm going to bring this back to my classroom when I come back.

00:03:44.441 --> 00:03:53.383
I'm definitely going to use the chat, gpt and using the prompts, putting the prompts in and then not just the prompt.

00:03:53.383 --> 00:03:54.306
You can go deeper.

00:03:54.306 --> 00:03:58.503
You could put the prompt in and then you can say, okay, change this, take this out.

00:03:58.503 --> 00:04:05.668
I want you to do the prompt, but now add this in, and so that was a really, really good one.

00:04:05.668 --> 00:04:13.110
And then DFIT we learned about you know DFIT, and so I got some really good stuff to take back.

00:04:13.110 --> 00:04:17.208
I can't wait to share with my colleagues and let them know some of this stuff.

00:04:17.548 --> 00:04:18.630
That is wonderful.

00:04:18.630 --> 00:04:19.492
It was great.

00:04:19.492 --> 00:04:27.571
So now, Alicia, is there anything else you'd like to share with the community, the education community, about things that you're doing in your work?

00:04:29.701 --> 00:04:36.855
So right now, our biggest thing and our principal is really great about it is relationship.

00:04:36.855 --> 00:04:55.228
You have to really build relationships with your students and over the past five years we have been intentional about building relationships with our kids because when they trust you, then they'll learn from you, and so I would really really strongly suggest build those relationships with your kids.

00:04:55.228 --> 00:05:06.033
Let them know that you care, that you're not just there to teach them a content or a subject that you care, and when they know that they're going to trust you and they're going to learn.

00:05:09.045 --> 00:05:10.348
That's amazing, alicia.

00:05:10.348 --> 00:05:10.869
Thank you.

00:05:11.470 --> 00:05:16.867
this podcast was brought to you by ABC spotlight for success, thank you so much.

00:05:17.007 --> 00:05:18.451
Thank you for having me.

00:05:18.451 --> 00:05:19.132
I appreciate it.

00:05:19.132 --> 00:05:19.752
Thank you.
