Educational Success with Hip-Hop

Merv Jenkins from Renaissance Learning joins us to share his transformative journey with Flocabulary, an innovative platform that uses hip-hop to revolutionize education. Discover how Merv's partnership with Grammy-winning producer 9th Wonder in the early 2000s led to the creation of engaging educational content that makes vocabulary acquisition exciting and effective. Merv, drawing from his experiences as a high school assistant principal, discusses the importance of bridging the gap between "word rich" and "word poor" students, highlighting how Flocabulary is changing classroom dynamics and improving student outcomes.

00:00:02.600 --> 00:00:05.931
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:05.931 --> 00:00:19.289
We are here at LaCue I am Devin Pintozzi, your host, and we are here with Merv Jenkins, with Renaissance Learning, here to talk about some of the exciting things they're doing and how that process all got started.
00:00:19.289 --> 00:00:21.126
Hello Merv, how are you today?
00:00:21.320 --> 00:00:21.981
Dev doing good.
00:00:21.981 --> 00:00:24.329
Thank you for having us do this, man.
00:00:24.640 --> 00:00:25.280
Wonderful.
00:00:25.280 --> 00:00:31.272
Tell us what Renaissance Learning is doing here at Nearpod or at LaCue.
00:00:31.533 --> 00:00:31.873
Absolutely.
00:00:32.843 --> 00:00:34.008
And all of that process.
00:00:34.219 --> 00:00:35.100
Well Devin.
00:00:35.100 --> 00:00:46.872
Quite frankly, we want folks to know about the umbrella of product solutions that we offer for school districts around the country and around the world, but two specific ones.
00:00:46.872 --> 00:00:50.896
I know you spoke with my Julie, earlier about Nearpod.
00:00:50.896 --> 00:00:54.030
Yes, and she represents the FloCab platform.
00:00:54.030 --> 00:00:56.088
I represent the FloCab platform.
00:00:56.088 --> 00:01:05.933
We love the idea of bringing something relevant to students and really engaging them in their learning, so that's why I'm here specifically.
00:01:06.460 --> 00:01:09.519
All right, can you tell us a little bit about Flocabulary?
00:01:09.799 --> 00:01:14.790
Yeah, Flocabulary began as an engagement tool many, many moons ago.
00:01:14.790 --> 00:01:16.793
I'm talking early 2000,.
00:01:16.793 --> 00:01:17.902
Like 2003.
00:01:17.902 --> 00:01:22.432
I was a high school assistant principal at the time and I had
00:01:22.512 --> 00:01:23.274
Oh, where did you teach?
00:01:23.400 --> 00:01:35.111
Well, I taught in Charleston, south Carolina, and I was a high school assistant principal a nd principal in the North Carolina area, specifically Chatham County and Chapel Hill-Carlborough City Schools.
00:01:35.271 --> 00:01:35.531
Wow.
00:01:37.424 --> 00:01:45.346
So I did this interview on NPR it was nationally broadcasted called the Rapping Principal and these two guys from New York.
00:01:45.346 --> 00:01:53.772
They heard the interview and they eventually made contact and said hey, we're going to be launching this company using hip-hop music in the classroom.
00:01:53.772 --> 00:01:56.409
Would you be willing to write some songs for it?
00:01:56.409 --> 00:02:12.433
So myself, a good friend of mine, 9th Wonder, who has produced for he's a Grammy-winning producer Jay-Z, beyonce, you name it 9th and I launched some of the very first Flow Cab content for that company.
00:02:12.433 --> 00:02:14.405
But again, that was 20-plus years ago.
00:02:14.405 --> 00:02:17.072
Yeah, man, good times.
00:02:17.599 --> 00:02:18.765
Wow, that is wonderful.
00:02:18.765 --> 00:02:26.020
And so what are you hoping to bring to LaCue and what are you hoping to get out of LaCue that you're going to bring out here to other places?
00:02:26.300 --> 00:02:31.638
If I got a microphone and some music, I'll probably entertain with some little on-the-spot performances.
00:02:31.657 --> 00:02:32.079
Nice,
00:02:32.661 --> 00:02:34.527
I like to freestyle as people are walking by.
00:02:34.527 --> 00:02:37.729
I call their names out, put the name badges in the rap and all that good stuff.
00:02:38.060 --> 00:02:38.200
Oh wow.
00:02:38.221 --> 00:02:45.179
And I'll really just talk to the crowd about what Flocabulary can do for your students, because it really is a game changer.
00:02:45.179 --> 00:02:45.340
Man.
00:02:45.340 --> 00:02:55.251
Like, when it comes to vocabulary acquisition, people sleep on the whole idea that you have students who are word rich and students who are word poor, and that's just the reality of it.
00:02:55.251 --> 00:03:04.645
And if we don't get the word poor students up to the word rich category, life as an adult tends to be a whole lot more difficult, and there's a lot of research behind that.
00:03:04.645 --> 00:03:08.733
So that's what I like to think that we're doing and how we're making a difference.
00:03:08.913 --> 00:03:12.709
That's wonderful and what an engaging way, using hip-hop, to get all of that done.
00:03:12.769 --> 00:03:13.090
Bingo.
00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:20.274
So if the audience here at LaCue would like to see some places where they could see clips of your work, do you know where to send them?
00:03:20.780 --> 00:03:23.685
I mean just go to the FloCabulary website it's just www.
00:03:23.685 --> 00:03:23.685
flocabulary.
00:03:23.685 --> 00:03:29.155
com and there's an All About link at the very bottom.
00:03:29.155 --> 00:03:44.453
You can pull up some of the research we've done over the years around the platform and from there you can find your way to different blogs that have been posted over the years and eventually run across some of my work as well, if you're really really cruising deep in social media.
00:03:45.481 --> 00:03:46.445
That is awesome, merv.
00:03:46.445 --> 00:03:47.463
Thank you so much.
00:03:47.585 --> 00:03:47.906
Thank you
00:03:48.520 --> 00:03:48.942
Once again.
00:03:48.942 --> 00:03:53.812
This is Merv Jenkins with Flowcabulary Renaissance Learning.
00:03:53.812 --> 00:03:56.462
Thank you so much for being part of our podcast today.
00:03:56.743 --> 00:03:57.343
Dev, thank you.
00:03:57.504 --> 00:03:57.905
Thank you.
00:00:02.600 --> 00:00:05.931
00:00:05.931 --> 00:00:19.289
00:00:19.289 --> 00:00:21.126
00:00:21.320 --> 00:00:21.981
00:00:21.981 --> 00:00:24.329
00:00:24.640 --> 00:00:25.280
00:00:25.280 --> 00:00:31.272
00:00:31.533 --> 00:00:31.873
00:00:32.843 --> 00:00:34.008
00:00:34.219 --> 00:00:35.100
00:00:35.100 --> 00:00:46.872
00:00:46.872 --> 00:00:50.896
00:00:50.896 --> 00:00:54.030
00:00:54.030 --> 00:00:56.088
00:00:56.088 --> 00:01:05.933
00:01:06.460 --> 00:01:09.519
00:01:09.799 --> 00:01:14.790
00:01:14.790 --> 00:01:16.793
00:01:16.793 --> 00:01:17.902
00:01:17.902 --> 00:01:22.432
00:01:22.512 --> 00:01:23.274
00:01:23.400 --> 00:01:35.111
00:01:35.271 --> 00:01:35.531
00:01:37.424 --> 00:01:45.346
00:01:45.346 --> 00:01:53.772
00:01:53.772 --> 00:01:56.409
00:01:56.409 --> 00:02:12.433
00:02:12.433 --> 00:02:14.405
00:02:14.405 --> 00:02:17.072
00:02:17.599 --> 00:02:18.765
00:02:18.765 --> 00:02:26.020
00:02:26.300 --> 00:02:31.638
00:02:31.657 --> 00:02:32.079
00:02:32.661 --> 00:02:34.527
00:02:34.527 --> 00:02:37.729
00:02:38.060 --> 00:02:38.200
00:02:38.221 --> 00:02:45.179
00:02:45.179 --> 00:02:45.340
00:02:45.340 --> 00:02:55.251
00:02:55.251 --> 00:03:04.645
00:03:04.645 --> 00:03:08.733
00:03:08.913 --> 00:03:12.709
00:03:12.769 --> 00:03:13.090
00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:20.274
