00:00:01.963 --> 00:00:09.494
This podcast spotlight for success is our way of highlighting the incredible success stories happening in education right here in our home state of Georgia.
00:00:09.494 --> 00:00:20.376
Today, we're thrilled to be joined by Dr Randall, who has made a significant impact in the field of social studies, education and through his work with the Center for Civic Engagement.
00:00:20.376 --> 00:00:28.385
We'll explore his journey, insights and the positive changes he's creating for students and teachers and here at GCSS.
00:00:28.385 --> 00:00:29.507
So let's get started.
00:00:29.507 --> 00:00:32.281
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, Dr Randall.
00:00:32.603 --> 00:00:32.963
Sure.
00:00:33.103 --> 00:00:35.670
So Georgia native.
00:00:35.670 --> 00:00:38.819
One of my friends called it.
00:00:39.158 --> 00:00:40.262
georgia born, georgia bred.
00:00:40.262 --> 00:00:48.201
One day I'll be Georgia dead, but lifelong Georgia native, a firm believer in social studies education.
00:00:48.201 --> 00:01:01.753
I'm the CEO of the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement, which really was an outgrowth of my doctoral research when I realized we just didn't have a lot of civic education resources in Georgia.
00:01:03.780 --> 00:01:04.162
Excellent.
00:01:04.162 --> 00:01:08.072
So what kind of things are you hoping to get out of the conference today?
00:01:08.439 --> 00:01:10.728
Well, this is like a family reunion.
00:01:10.728 --> 00:01:20.328
So, this is probably my 16th or 17th conference, so come and see all the friends of the other vendors and, of course, the teachers that we work with.
00:01:20.328 --> 00:01:25.632
A lot of the teachers we serve are members here and are visiting.
00:01:27.635 --> 00:01:32.766
That's wonderful, and how did you get involved with the Georgia Center for Civics Education?
00:01:33.126 --> 00:01:38.206
So I grew up in a program that did a model legislature and stuff.
00:01:38.206 --> 00:01:40.778
One day they started paying me- volunteered.
00:01:40.778 --> 00:01:42.463
Then they started paying me, which was great.
00:01:42.463 --> 00:01:45.433
A few years later I had a board meeting.
00:01:45.433 --> 00:01:46.537
They hired me as CEO,
00:01:46.737 --> 00:01:47.140
that's wonderful.
00:01:47.280 --> 00:01:48.465
Isn't it great how that happens.
00:01:48.465 --> 00:01:53.873
So I've been involved really in the program since I was in middle school Wow.
00:01:53.873 --> 00:01:59.912
And one of the most influential and impactful programs I ever participated in was our model legislature.
00:01:59.912 --> 00:02:10.370
And I remember walking in as a high school freshman into the state house representatives and it took my breath away and just the power of that moment.
00:02:10.370 --> 00:02:16.789
You know just a young kid from Dalton, georgia, you know, who hadn't been out of the carpet capital for for much.
00:02:16.789 --> 00:02:24.823
But here I am in the, the state legislature, in the state house, and and honestly you know I've now been doing this professionally for 21 years.
00:02:24.823 --> 00:02:29.713
And you know, take students every year to the Capitol and we do the model legislature.
00:02:29.713 --> 00:02:31.105
And it still takes my breath away.
00:02:31.105 --> 00:02:37.532
But I remember that as a student and that's a reminder for me to do the same thing for the students to pay it forward.
00:02:37.992 --> 00:02:38.713
That's wonderful.
00:02:38.713 --> 00:02:44.807
Can you tell us more about that program that you're running this year, this being an election year; and I understand there's a lot of students involved?
00:02:50.099 --> 00:02:50.640
So we have lots of programs.
00:02:50.640 --> 00:02:53.949
So we have over 250,000 Georgia K-12 students involved in a mock election that's going on right now.
00:02:53.949 --> 00:02:55.622
In fact it closes out tomorrow.
00:02:55.622 --> 00:03:03.943
We do it early because the election platform people ask us last year please don't do it on election day because you crashed the system last year.
00:03:03.943 --> 00:03:15.891
So we're doing it early and what's interesting is and we've been doing the mock election now for 10 or 12 years and it is such a predictor of what's going to happen for Georgia.
00:03:15.891 --> 00:03:23.263
But we absolutely will not release the data until election day because we don't want to become a polling source or a news bot.
00:03:23.263 --> 00:03:33.790
For us it's about the students developing that civic muscle and we do it every November and we do real ballot measures it's not your favorite ice cream because we want the students to get in the habit.
00:03:33.790 --> 00:03:36.027
In November we go and vote.
00:03:36.659 --> 00:03:40.350
It becomes a part of their civic muscle, and it's just what we do.
00:03:40.350 --> 00:03:43.689
We show up because it's our right, but we show up because it's our duty.
00:03:48.419 --> 00:03:49.242
Oh, that's great, Dr Randall.
00:03:49.242 --> 00:03:49.683
Is there anything?
00:03:49.704 --> 00:03:51.530
else you'd like to share with the audience about things that are going on.
00:03:51.530 --> 00:03:54.201
So we also have a model legislature program and that's the program that just took my breath away.
00:03:54.201 --> 00:03:59.582
In the state capitol we have 800 students in two weeks coming to high school students coming to Georgia capitol.
00:03:59.582 --> 00:04:03.530
We take over the house, the senate, the tour ropes come down, they're in the desk.
00:04:03.530 --> 00:04:06.414
We have a student speaker of the House, student lieutenant governor, student governor.
00:04:06.414 --> 00:04:08.829
We're in the Supreme Court hearing cases.
00:04:08.829 --> 00:04:10.905
In fact, that's a competition.
00:04:10.905 --> 00:04:15.311
The final case is actually listened to by judges from the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court.
00:04:15.471 --> 00:04:16.093
Holy smokes.
00:04:16.279 --> 00:04:30.011
So I mean, I like to tease and say we let our students put on the robes of democracy and we're teaching them that in order to do the we, the people part, they have to be the people, and so that's what we're all about.
00:04:31.702 --> 00:04:35.673
Wow, dr Randall, thank you so much for speaking with us and your participation.
00:04:37.043 --> 00:04:38.045
Thanks for what you do.
00:04:38.045 --> 00:04:41.333
Your work is so important to supporting the educators, so thank you.
00:04:41.660 --> 00:04:42.661
All right, thank you.
00:04:42.661 --> 00:04:43.502
Have a good day you too.
00:00:01.963 --> 00:00:09.494
00:00:09.494 --> 00:00:20.376
00:00:20.376 --> 00:00:28.385
00:00:28.385 --> 00:00:29.507
00:00:29.507 --> 00:00:32.281
00:00:32.603 --> 00:00:32.963
00:00:33.103 --> 00:00:35.670
00:00:35.670 --> 00:00:38.819
00:00:39.158 --> 00:00:40.262
00:00:40.262 --> 00:00:48.201
00:00:48.201 --> 00:01:01.753
00:01:03.780 --> 00:01:04.162
00:01:04.162 --> 00:01:08.072
00:01:08.439 --> 00:01:10.728
00:01:10.728 --> 00:01:20.328
00:01:20.328 --> 00:01:25.632
00:01:27.635 --> 00:01:32.766
00:01:33.126 --> 00:01:38.206
00:01:38.206 --> 00:01:40.778
00:01:40.778 --> 00:01:42.463
00:01:42.463 --> 00:01:45.433
00:01:45.433 --> 00:01:46.537
00:01:46.737 --> 00:01:47.140
00:01:47.280 --> 00:01:48.465
00:01:48.465 --> 00:01:53.873
00:01:53.873 --> 00:01:59.912
00:01:59.912 --> 00:02:10.370
00:02:10.370 --> 00:02:16.789
00:02:16.789 --> 00:02:24.823
00:02:24.823 --> 00:02:29.713
00:02:29.713 --> 00:02:31.105
00:02:31.105 --> 00:02:37.532
00:02:37.992 --> 00:02:38.713
00:02:38.713 --> 00:02:44.807
00:02:50.099 --> 00:02:50.640
00:02:50.640 --> 00:02:53.949
00:02:53.949 --> 00:02:55.622
00:02:55.622 --> 00:03:03.943
00:03:03.943 --> 00:03:15.891
00:03:15.891 --> 00:03:23.263
00:03:23.263 --> 00:03:33.790
00:03:33.790 --> 00:03:36.027
00:03:36.659 --> 00:03:40.350
00:03:40.350 --> 00:03:43.689
00:03:48.419 --> 00:03:49.242
00:03:49.242 --> 00:03:49.683
00:03:49.704 --> 00:03:51.530
00:03:51.530 --> 00:03:54.201
00:03:54.201 --> 00:03:59.582
00:03:59.582 --> 00:04:03.530
00:04:03.530 --> 00:04:06.414
00:04:06.414 --> 00:04:08.829
00:04:08.829 --> 00:04:10.905
00:04:10.905 --> 00:04:15.311
00:04:15.471 --> 00:04:16.093
00:04:16.279 --> 00:04:30.011
00:04:31.702 --> 00:04:35.673
00:04:37.043 --> 00:04:38.045
00:04:38.045 --> 00:04:41.333
00:04:41.660 --> 00:04:42.661
00:04:42.661 --> 00:04:43.502
