00:00:01.703 --> 00:00:05.352
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:05.352 --> 00:00:13.550
We are here at the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics with Cydney Clifton with HeartMath Tutoring.
00:00:13.810 --> 00:00:14.192
Hello.
00:00:14.352 --> 00:00:14.852
Welcome.
00:00:14.932 --> 00:00:15.374
Thank you.
00:00:16.059 --> 00:00:19.646
It's so great to see you here at the SCCTM.
00:00:19.646 --> 00:00:23.393
Can you tell us about what brought you here to this conference?
00:00:23.519 --> 00:00:25.025
Yeah, absolutely so.
00:00:25.025 --> 00:00:42.610
Our organization works with elementary schools across the Carolinas, so the opportunity to come and learn from experts in the field and what's going on with math education from other educators is so valuable to us to make sure that we're aligned to what schools and districts are doing in South Carolina.
00:00:43.131 --> 00:00:46.826
Wonderful so with HeartMathTutoring is is that heartmattutoring.
00:00:46.826 --> 00:00:47.868
com?
00:00:48.069 --> 00:00:49.110
Yes or .org
00:00:49.191 --> 00:00:49.311
.
00:00:49.311 --> 00:00:49.311
org.
00:00:51.240 --> 00:00:52.786
Wonderful nonprofit work.
00:00:52.786 --> 00:00:55.795
Yes, can you tell us about the community that you serve?
00:00:55.956 --> 00:00:56.539
Yeah, absolutely.
00:00:56.539 --> 00:00:57.002
So.
00:00:57.002 --> 00:01:07.272
We recruit and bring community volunteers into elementary schools that have under-resourced students that wouldn't be able to have access to something like one-on-one private tutoring.
00:01:07.272 --> 00:01:17.391
So we recruit and train the volunteers to be able to deliver foundational math skills and number sense for 50 to 60 students per school site that we work with.
00:01:17.801 --> 00:01:18.786
That is wonderful.
00:01:18.786 --> 00:01:21.123
And what kind of?
00:01:21.123 --> 00:01:24.932
Do you have a success story you'd like to share that's gone on in the community?
00:01:25.012 --> 00:01:25.754
Yes, I would love to.
00:01:25.754 --> 00:01:26.561
I think that.
00:01:26.561 --> 00:01:28.146
So our students are working.
00:01:28.146 --> 00:01:37.689
We assess the students in the beginning of the year to figure out what specifically their foundational skills that they're missing, and then they work at that level and at their own pace through the course of the year.
00:01:37.689 --> 00:01:48.203
So they're spending this hour a week working at a level that's appropriate and makes sense to them, and we're kind of chipping away at this lack of confidence or fear that they might have towards math.
00:01:48.203 --> 00:01:54.174
So one of my favorite things is just to see the students confidence from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
00:01:54.194 --> 00:01:55.944
We had a student last year.
00:01:55.944 --> 00:02:02.314
He was new to the country and you could tell he really understood the math but had a hard time explaining his thinking right.
00:02:02.314 --> 00:02:04.442
So that is where the tutor came in.
00:02:04.442 --> 00:02:06.269
So so they were spending these sessions.
00:02:06.269 --> 00:02:13.108
They were using cubes and dice and cards and bringing really that language, that mathematical language, to what was going on in his brain.
00:02:13.108 --> 00:02:18.772
And at the end of the year I assessed him and he would not stop talking like explaining everything.
00:02:18.772 --> 00:02:26.709
He would just walk through every single problem and at the end he goes I'm still working on my explaining and I was like you have come so far.
00:02:26.990 --> 00:02:27.251
Wow.
00:02:27.901 --> 00:02:37.932
And I do wonder like without that kind of one-on-one time and that safe space, that would have probably been pretty hard for him to have that kind of confidence growth within the school year.
00:02:38.319 --> 00:02:43.712
There's nothing like the power of an educator or tutor or someone pouring into someone's life like that.
00:02:43.712 --> 00:02:45.407
That is so wonderful what you're doing.
00:02:45.407 --> 00:02:48.968
Can you share with us a little bit what brought you into HeartMath?
00:02:48.968 --> 00:02:49.811
You were in college.
00:02:50.259 --> 00:02:50.441
Yes.
00:02:50.441 --> 00:03:12.906
So I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, after I graduated and I taught middle school, was a seventh grade social studies teacher and I taught math for a semester and then I was an instructional facilitator helping coach and support the teachers and I found Heart and so we work within public schools but we're a non-profit.
00:03:12.906 --> 00:03:18.786
So this kind of intersection of bringing community into schools and really seeing what wonderful things are happening I felt really excited about.
00:03:18.786 --> 00:03:19.907
And then the one-on-one piece.
00:03:19.907 --> 00:03:32.984
So I had 180 students when I taught because it was middle school block schedule and as much as I'd like to think I met each one of them, I know that there were ones that were falling through the cracks.
00:03:32.984 --> 00:03:38.752
So we really focus and give a lot of attention to our students to make sure that they're progressing as much as possible.
00:03:39.114 --> 00:03:40.155
That is fantastic.
00:03:40.155 --> 00:03:44.049
Do you have anything else you'd like to share with the SCCTM community?
00:03:44.449 --> 00:03:45.171
Yeah, absolutely.
00:03:45.171 --> 00:03:50.712
We are in Charleston County School District in South Carolina right now.
00:03:50.712 --> 00:03:57.646
We've got about 160 students that we're working with across four school sites, so anyone in the Charleston area.
00:03:57.646 --> 00:04:01.060
We are still recruiting volunteers to be tutors.
00:04:01.060 --> 00:04:06.092
We provide the curriculum, an on-site staff person, all of the different pieces.
00:04:06.092 --> 00:04:14.191
They pick their school, their day of the week and their time and they tutor for 30 minutes or an hour once a week and then for the rest of the state.
00:04:14.191 --> 00:04:22.901
Like we're still very much interested in opportunities to grow and bring our mission to other cities, so if that's something that interests folks, I would be the person to talk to.
00:04:23.603 --> 00:04:26.747
Well, thank you so much, Cydney Clifton HeartMath Tutoring.
00:04:26.747 --> 00:04:31.334
Really appreciate you coming on board with us today, yeah, and I hope you have a very successful conference.
00:04:31.535 --> 00:04:32.175
Thank you for having me.
00:04:33.511 --> 00:04:34.016
Thank you.
00:00:01.703 --> 00:00:05.352
00:00:05.352 --> 00:00:13.550
00:00:13.810 --> 00:00:14.192
00:00:14.352 --> 00:00:14.852
00:00:14.932 --> 00:00:15.374
00:00:16.059 --> 00:00:19.646
00:00:19.646 --> 00:00:23.393
00:00:23.519 --> 00:00:25.025
00:00:25.025 --> 00:00:42.610
00:00:43.131 --> 00:00:46.826
00:00:46.826 --> 00:00:47.868
00:00:48.069 --> 00:00:49.110
00:00:49.191 --> 00:00:49.311
00:00:49.311 --> 00:00:49.311
00:00:51.240 --> 00:00:52.786
00:00:52.786 --> 00:00:55.795
00:00:55.956 --> 00:00:56.539
00:00:56.539 --> 00:00:57.002
00:00:57.002 --> 00:01:07.272
00:01:07.272 --> 00:01:17.391
00:01:17.801 --> 00:01:18.786
00:01:18.786 --> 00:01:21.123
00:01:21.123 --> 00:01:24.932
00:01:25.012 --> 00:01:25.754
00:01:25.754 --> 00:01:26.561
00:01:26.561 --> 00:01:28.146
00:01:28.146 --> 00:01:37.689
00:01:37.689 --> 00:01:48.203
00:01:48.203 --> 00:01:54.174
00:01:54.194 --> 00:01:55.944
00:01:55.944 --> 00:02:02.314
00:02:02.314 --> 00:02:04.442
00:02:04.442 --> 00:02:06.269
00:02:06.269 --> 00:02:13.108
00:02:13.108 --> 00:02:18.772
00:02:18.772 --> 00:02:26.709
00:02:26.990 --> 00:02:27.251
00:02:27.901 --> 00:02:37.932
00:02:38.319 --> 00:02:43.712
00:02:43.712 --> 00:02:45.407
00:02:45.407 --> 00:02:48.968
00:02:48.968 --> 00:02:49.811
00:02:50.259 --> 00:02:50.441
00:02:50.441 --> 00:03:12.906
00:03:12.906 --> 00:03:18.786
00:03:18.786 --> 00:03:19.907
00:03:19.907 --> 00:03:32.984
00:03:32.984 --> 00:03:38.752
00:03:39.114 --> 00:03:40.155
00:03:40.155 --> 00:03:44.049
00:03:44.449 --> 00:03:45.171
00:03:45.171 --> 00:03:50.712
00:03:50.712 --> 00:03:57.646
00:03:57.646 --> 00:04:01.060
00:04:01.060 --> 00:04:06.092
00:04:06.092 --> 00:04:14.191
00:04:14.191 --> 00:04:22.901
00:04:23.603 --> 00:04:26.747
00:04:26.747 --> 00:04:31.334
00:04:31.535 --> 00:04:32.175
00:04:33.511 --> 00:04:34.016
