Beyond Gaming: The Academic Impact of Esports

What if Esports could revolutionize education as we know it? Join us on Spotlight for Success as we sit down with Jeffery Harrison from the Louisiana Scholastic Esports Federation (LASF), who is at the forefront of this transformative movement. Jeffery shares how LASF is reshaping the perception of Esports from mere gaming to a dynamic educational platform that fosters skills in broadcasting, leadership, and event management. 00:00:01.364 --> 00:00:04.612
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:04.612 --> 00:00:06.527
We are here at LeCue.
00:00:06.527 --> 00:00:13.611
I am Devin Pintosi, your host, and we are here with Jeffrey Harrison with LASF.
00:00:13.611 --> 00:00:15.294
Welcome, jeffrey.
00:00:15.294 --> 00:00:22.393
Hey, thanks for having me All right, so tell us a bit about what you're doing here, jeffrey, with LASF and eSports.
00:00:22.393 --> 00:00:23.425
What does LASF stand for?
00:00:23.539 --> 00:00:25.201
Yeah, louisiana Scholastic eSports Federation.
00:00:25.201 --> 00:00:25.495
So we put Scholastic in.
00:00:25.495 --> 00:00:25.493
And eSports.
00:00:25.493 --> 00:00:25.428
What does LASF stand for?
00:00:25.428 --> 00:00:25.742
Yeah, louisiana Scholastic eSports Federation.
00:00:25.742 --> 00:00:29.420
So we put Scholastic in the eSports because a lot of people think it's just gaming.
00:00:29.420 --> 00:00:32.289
But we're here to prove everybody wrong, okay.
00:00:32.289 --> 00:00:33.524
So how are you doing that?
00:00:33.524 --> 00:00:36.670
So I mean, just like you're doing right here with this broadcasting.
00:00:36.670 --> 00:00:38.347
This is what a lot of our kids are learning.
00:00:38.347 --> 00:00:43.807
They're doing broadcasting production behind the scenes, they're doing leadership management while they're running the.
00:00:43.807 --> 00:00:48.334
We have an event space in Baton Rouge, but the students are running the tournaments in the event space.
00:00:48.334 --> 00:00:59.600
We have a student ambassador program, so they're the ones that help take the ownership over our program, to lead it, and they train younger students in the middle school how to take their jobs one day.
00:00:59.600 --> 00:01:02.545
But you know their goal is I don't want you to replace me.
00:01:02.545 --> 00:01:04.228
I want you to be better than me at some point.
00:01:04.308 --> 00:01:07.033
So we have a whole program that we're doing right now.
00:01:07.573 --> 00:01:08.155
That is great.
00:01:08.155 --> 00:01:09.807
It's really an impressive setup.
00:01:09.807 --> 00:01:19.051
I know we can't see it here on the camera, but really an impressive setup here, with all of the eSports, different sections here and the gaming that's going on.
00:01:19.051 --> 00:01:22.765
I saw there were a number of people from a certain parish correct?
00:01:22.805 --> 00:01:24.347
Yeah, that was my district.
00:01:24.347 --> 00:01:26.111
I work for East Paddington Parish School System as well.
00:01:26.111 --> 00:01:28.935
I'm the director of network operations and eSports for that district.
00:01:28.935 --> 00:01:34.027
So we bussed in about 50 kids to come and play.
00:01:34.027 --> 00:01:39.387
And we also had our state title yesterday for Super Smash Brothers, which Brother Martin from New Orleans won.
00:01:39.849 --> 00:01:42.867
Gosh, that's awesome, and the karaoke was a lot of fun last night too.
00:01:45.060 --> 00:01:47.281
Oh yeah, that's something new we're doing.
00:01:47.281 --> 00:01:59.915
I've been coming to LaCue for a long time and then with esports, we basically are kind of having a, I guess a commingled conference here with LaCue, so we call it Lace Up Con, so we have a dedicated room to none but esports sessions.
00:01:59.915 --> 00:02:16.752
But they also come down here and see, you know, the work in action, because, again, trying to get everybody to see the value in it has been a difficulty, but now when they come down here at the tournament watching our students doing production and running the tournaments and all that stuff, then they're getting to see it.
00:02:16.752 --> 00:02:18.888
Oh wait, this is more than gaming, you know.
00:02:18.888 --> 00:02:20.206
So we're trying to.
00:02:20.206 --> 00:02:23.187
You know, work with LaCue and just keep pushing that message out and grow each other's.
00:02:23.187 --> 00:02:24.933
You know, work with LaCue and just keep pushing that message out and grow each other's.
00:02:24.933 --> 00:02:28.305
You know, conferences at the same time with a partnership, in a way that is wonderful, Jeffrey.
00:02:28.365 --> 00:02:30.961
how did you get involved with esports so?
00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:31.382
I've been.
00:02:31.382 --> 00:02:36.882
So I've been working for the school district for 24 years now, okay, since I was 18.
00:02:36.882 --> 00:02:38.723
And it's always been.
00:02:38.723 --> 00:02:44.793
You know, we always had like librarians or somebody that was a kind of a gamer hey, can we do this on the network and that kind of stuff.
00:02:44.793 --> 00:02:50.783
And I always had previous you know CTOs that would say, no, we're not doing that, we're not opening up the network.
00:02:50.783 --> 00:02:54.893
And you know my current CTO.
00:02:54.893 --> 00:03:00.450
She's been working with me for a long time and basically she said, if you can do it safely, do it.
00:03:00.450 --> 00:03:03.554
I was like, all right, it's going to happen and it's going to be big.
00:03:04.133 --> 00:03:07.455
And right now we have 56 schools in our district alone.
00:03:07.455 --> 00:03:15.692
So it's over 52% of the school district that has an esports program in it, and that's ranging from teams coming to our arena from after-school programs.
00:03:15.692 --> 00:03:23.801
So like, even with that, let's just say you have an after-school tutoring program and kids didn't really want to go to that.
00:03:23.801 --> 00:03:24.681
You know, I don't want to go.
00:03:24.681 --> 00:03:26.024
Stay in school after hours.
00:03:26.024 --> 00:03:27.485
Well, guess what's happening now?
00:03:27.485 --> 00:03:31.609
There's a waiting list because now you have an incentive you go do tutoring.
00:03:31.609 --> 00:03:35.252
You have to do tutoring, but you get to go to the eSports lab after tutoring.
00:03:35.453 --> 00:03:38.716
And it's helping GPAs go up in schools because of it.
00:03:38.795 --> 00:03:41.722
Wow, yep, that is a fantastic program.
00:03:41.722 --> 00:03:42.704
What a great win for everybody.
00:03:42.704 --> 00:03:43.406
That's great.
00:03:43.406 --> 00:03:45.352
How long has that been going on in East Baton Rouge?
00:03:46.342 --> 00:03:49.831
Yeah, so we just started, pretty much last year, with a 21st century grant.
00:03:49.831 --> 00:03:55.110
They've been doing a grant for a while and then they asked hey, can we try to incorporate esports into our program, Like heck yeah.
00:03:56.020 --> 00:03:57.145
Gosh, that is awesome.
00:03:57.145 --> 00:03:57.948
That's great.
00:03:57.948 --> 00:04:02.026
Is there anything you'd like to share with the LaCue community about, about what you're doing?
00:04:02.067 --> 00:04:02.206
here.
00:04:02.206 --> 00:04:06.854
I mean we're just trying to bring esports in, bring it into a positive spin.
00:04:06.854 --> 00:04:12.509
You know, I'm real happy to be, and I just got elected to be on the LACUE board too.
00:04:12.751 --> 00:04:14.114
Oh congratulations, thank you.
00:04:14.700 --> 00:04:15.622
And you know my goal.
00:04:15.622 --> 00:04:19.132
You know one of my biggest goals is to help everybody out as I can.
00:04:19.132 --> 00:04:31.067
So even on LACUE, I have so many crazy ideas on how I can try to help even this conference and see what I can do to level it up, because that's just the way my mind works is competition, competition, competition.
00:04:31.067 --> 00:04:32.999
To bring out the best in everybody oh wonderful.
00:04:32.999 --> 00:04:34.584
But I also want to bring out fun.
00:04:34.584 --> 00:04:36.088
I mean, we're in New Orleans, let's have fun.
00:04:36.088 --> 00:04:36.990
They did karaoke.
00:04:36.990 --> 00:04:42.244
I was on one of their meetings like, oh well, we can help with that, no problem, help with that, no problem, let's help with that.
00:04:42.244 --> 00:04:43.665
And then the trivia night.
00:04:43.665 --> 00:04:46.387
I was over there DJing the 80s music because I love the 80s.
00:04:46.387 --> 00:04:52.392
So, whatever, I can help this organization grow with my organization growing at the same time.
00:04:52.392 --> 00:04:56.156
I can see us being the spotlight of Louisiana one day.
00:04:57.800 --> 00:04:58.942
Wow, that's wonderful Rising star here.
00:04:58.942 --> 00:05:02.733
We've got Jeffrey Harrison with eSports.
00:05:02.733 --> 00:05:04.762
And what's the name?
00:05:04.762 --> 00:05:08.052
Lacef, lace name LACEF, lacef, lacef.
00:05:08.052 --> 00:05:15.913
Thank you so much for being part of us here at Spotlight for Success and I hope the rest of the conference is fantastic for your organization.
00:05:15.913 --> 00:05:16.817
Appreciate it, thank you.
00:00:01.364 --> 00:00:04.612
00:00:04.612 --> 00:00:06.527
00:00:06.527 --> 00:00:13.611
00:00:13.611 --> 00:00:15.294
00:00:15.294 --> 00:00:22.393
00:00:22.393 --> 00:00:23.425
00:00:23.539 --> 00:00:25.201
00:00:25.201 --> 00:00:25.495
00:00:25.495 --> 00:00:25.493
00:00:25.493 --> 00:00:25.428
00:00:25.428 --> 00:00:25.742
00:00:25.742 --> 00:00:29.420
00:00:29.420 --> 00:00:32.289
00:00:32.289 --> 00:00:33.524
00:00:33.524 --> 00:00:36.670
00:00:36.670 --> 00:00:38.347
00:00:38.347 --> 00:00:43.807
00:00:43.807 --> 00:00:48.334
00:00:48.334 --> 00:00:59.600
00:00:59.600 --> 00:01:02.545
00:01:02.545 --> 00:01:04.228
00:01:04.308 --> 00:01:07.033
00:01:07.573 --> 00:01:08.155
00:01:08.155 --> 00:01:09.807
00:01:09.807 --> 00:01:19.051
00:01:19.051 --> 00:01:22.765
00:01:22.805 --> 00:01:24.347
00:01:24.347 --> 00:01:26.111
00:01:26.111 --> 00:01:28.935
00:01:28.935 --> 00:01:34.027
00:01:34.027 --> 00:01:39.387
00:01:39.849 --> 00:01:42.867
00:01:45.060 --> 00:01:47.281
00:01:47.281 --> 00:01:59.915
00:01:59.915 --> 00:02:16.752
00:02:16.752 --> 00:02:18.888
00:02:18.888 --> 00:02:20.206
00:02:20.206 --> 00:02:23.187
00:02:23.187 --> 00:02:24.933
00:02:24.933 --> 00:02:28.305
00:02:28.365 --> 00:02:30.961
00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:31.382
00:02:31.382 --> 00:02:36.882
00:02:36.882 --> 00:02:38.723
00:02:38.723 --> 00:02:44.793
00:02:44.793 --> 00:02:50.783
00:02:50.783 --> 00:02:54.893
00:02:54.893 --> 00:03:00.450
00:03:00.450 --> 00:03:03.554
00:03:04.133 --> 00:03:07.455
00:03:07.455 --> 00:03:15.692
00:03:15.692 --> 00:03:23.801
00:03:23.801 --> 00:03:24.681
00:03:24.681 --> 00:03:26.024
00:03:26.024 --> 00:03:27.485
00:03:27.485 --> 00:03:31.609
00:03:31.609 --> 00:03:35.252
00:03:35.453 --> 00:03:38.716
00:03:38.795 --> 00:03:41.722
00:03:41.722 --> 00:03:42.704
00:03:42.704 --> 00:03:43.406
00:03:43.406 --> 00:03:45.352
00:03:46.342 --> 00:03:49.831
00:03:49.831 --> 00:03:55.110
00:03:56.020 --> 00:03:57.145
00:03:57.145 --> 00:03:57.948
00:03:57.948 --> 00:04:02.026
00:04:02.067 --> 00:04:02.206
00:04:02.206 --> 00:04:06.854
00:04:06.854 --> 00:04:12.509
00:04:12.751 --> 00:04:14.114
00:04:14.700 --> 00:04:15.622
00:04:15.622 --> 00:04:19.132
00:04:19.132 --> 00:04:31.067
00:04:31.067 --> 00:04:32.999
00:04:32.999 --> 00:04:34.584
00:04:34.584 --> 00:04:36.088
00:04:36.088 --> 00:04:36.990
00:04:36.990 --> 00:04:42.244
00:04:42.244 --> 00:04:43.665
00:04:43.665 --> 00:04:46.387
00:04:46.387 --> 00:04:52.392
00:04:52.392 --> 00:04:56.156
00:04:57.800 --> 00:04:58.942
00:04:58.942 --> 00:05:02.733
00:05:02.733 --> 00:05:04.762
00:05:04.762 --> 00:05:08.052
00:05:08.052 --> 00:05:15.913
00:05:15.913 --> 00:05:16.817
