Welcome to American Book Company's Spotlight for Success.
00:00:10.378 --> 00:00:15.512
We are here at the Georgia Educational Technology Conference with Kelly Brychell.
00:00:15.512 --> 00:00:24.922
She is a teacher at Corbett Elementary Schools in the gifted program and I understand that's part of Madison County Schools.
00:00:24.943 --> 00:00:25.626
Yes, yes, it is.
00:00:26.039 --> 00:00:26.841
All right, Kelly.
00:00:26.841 --> 00:00:29.690
Well, welcome to the podcast, thank you.
00:00:29.690 --> 00:00:35.505
Okay, I'd like to just let us know a little bit about yourself and what brought you here.
00:00:36.889 --> 00:00:39.274
This is my 25th year of teaching.
00:00:39.274 --> 00:00:55.133
I've taught kindergarten for eight years and then transitioned into gifted, so I work with kindergarten through fifth graders and I'm always looking for new ways that I can bring technology in in a meaningful and purposeful way.
00:00:56.200 --> 00:01:00.951
Wonderful and what led you to work in the gifted program.
00:01:02.481 --> 00:01:11.368
I had taught kindergarten for the eight years and after a while you want to try something new, and I had several things that were going on.
00:01:11.368 --> 00:01:19.691
I had changed districts, I had moved homes and I said why not just try something completely brand new?
00:01:19.691 --> 00:01:22.081
So I moved into the gifted spot.
00:01:22.441 --> 00:01:23.263
That's wonderful.
00:01:23.263 --> 00:01:27.123
Can you share with us some of your golden moments, as in teaching?
00:01:27.444 --> 00:01:34.004
Okay, well, definitely in kindergarten you see a lot of them because they are learning so much.
00:01:34.004 --> 00:01:35.266
They're just little sponges.
00:01:35.266 --> 00:01:55.867
I worked with a lot of students who were learning English and they would come into my classroom not knowing anything and seeing them grow throughout the year and finishing the year, being able to read, being able to speak with anybody who came in.
00:01:55.867 --> 00:01:59.317
It was amazing to see their growth.
00:01:59.317 --> 00:02:03.649
And then, working with the older grades, like the fifth graders.
00:02:03.649 --> 00:02:19.813
This year we just finished this book and there were a lot of twists and turns in it and I knew at the end it was going to wrap it up, but they were able to figure out those connections way earlier than expected.
00:02:19.813 --> 00:02:28.600
They were able to read all the clues, all the small little pieces and put it together.
00:02:28.600 --> 00:02:29.944
It was amazing to watch.
00:02:30.466 --> 00:02:39.481
That's wonderful being part of the gifted kids and seeing what you can do with them to help them to really shine as they go through their career and become productive citizens.
00:02:39.741 --> 00:02:42.387
Yes, and they're really eager to learn.
00:02:42.387 --> 00:02:46.974
It doesn't matter what you give them, they just want to take it and run with it.
00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:48.724
That is wonderful.
00:02:48.724 --> 00:02:51.769
Now I understand you're in Madison County, is that right?
00:02:51.769 --> 00:02:53.605
Yes, so can you explain?
00:02:53.605 --> 00:02:56.188
I understand that you mentioned that it's a rural environment.
00:02:56.479 --> 00:02:58.127
Yes, it's a very rural school.
00:02:58.127 --> 00:03:11.687
It is only about a half hour outside of Athens, so University of Georgia, But it is a very different environment than a large suburban, even urban school.
00:03:11.687 --> 00:03:22.592
We have a lot of agriculture, in fact the high school they have many programs that are agricultural-based.
00:03:24.382 --> 00:03:25.306
Well, that's wonderful.
00:03:25.306 --> 00:03:32.310
Is there anything else you'd like to share with the education community regarding the things that you do and what you've seen?
00:03:34.360 --> 00:03:46.088
I've seen education go through lots of different waves, but in the end the teachers really are just trying to do what's best for students and for their community.
00:03:47.341 --> 00:03:47.923
Wonderful.
00:03:47.923 --> 00:03:49.661
Well, thank you very much Again.
00:03:49.661 --> 00:03:52.349
This is Kelly Brychel with Madison County Schools.
00:03:52.349 --> 00:03:55.149
Thank you so much for participating today.
00:03:55.149 --> 00:03:57.769
I hope this is a wonderful, excellent conference for you.

00:00:39.274 --> 00:00:55.133
00:00:56.200 --> 00:01:00.951
00:01:02.481 --> 00:01:11.368
00:01:11.368 --> 00:01:19.691
